What the Critics Say

"Funny & wonderful & human. It gets the Stephanie Plum seal of approval." (Janet Evanovich)

"Archer navigates a satisfyingly complex plot and injects plenty of humor as she goes. This madcap debut is a winning hand for fans of Janet Evanovich and Deborah Coonts." (Library Journal)

"Another excellent reading by Dina Pearlman"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would be comfortable recommending this to any fan of cozy mysteries. While there is some romantic tension and violence, it does not proceed beyond a level acceptible for most cozy mystery lovers. I also continue to enjoy the reading/performance of Dina Pearlman. I have listened to many of her other audiobooks and find that she is consistently excellent.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Double Whammy?

Davis's encounters with Maxine and Mary at the Double Whammy machines. i also enjoyed Teeth and No Hair in all their intimidating glory.

Which character – as performed by Dina Pearlman – was your favorite?

Morgan George Sr.was my favorite character beyond Davis.

    Any additional comments?

Hoping that Double Dip will also make its way to audio.

    "Entertaining story. Awesome narrator."
Would you listen to Double Whammy again? Why?

Yes. Because some of the character's thoughts are so funny. I would enjoy listening again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Davis Way. Because of her name, where she is from, her personality and sarcasm.

Which character – as performed by Dina Pearlman – was your favorite?

    Davis Way, definitely.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Just entertaining overall. The author and narrator did a great job making me feel the characters and understand their thoughts/actions.

    Any additional comments?

Can't wait for the next book in the series! Please keep Dina Pearlman as the narrator -- she IS Davis Way.

"Hilarious fun! Can't wait for more"

I totally enjoyed this book! It was so funny. Davis Way is a little bit pathetic (but in a funny way), quite ingenious and completely hilarious. I am so glad that I stumbled upon this book here on audible and decided to give it a try. I bought the kindle book (well worth the $2.99) and the discounted audible book (also well worth the money or the credit). Dina Perlman does a great job narrating but the book reads well in print, too (I mostly listened to it but did read some of it). I will definitely be watching out for the next book in this series. I hope they do an audible version of that one, as well.

    "funny and entertaining!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Double Whammy to be better than the print version?

For me, this was fantastic. It made my morning walks go so much faster. I wanted to walk even further so I could keep listening!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Who would not love Davis? She is smart, witty, and you never know her next step.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Could not pick just one. But, the end was priceless!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Are you kidding me? I could not stop laughing..

    Any additional comments?

    This is a must read!!

    "slow and boring"
Would you try another book from Gretchen Archer and/or Dina Pearlman?

    no, I don't think so.

    Any additional comments?

I almost finished listening to part 1 but I had to stop. The story is boring and the narrator is very dry. This is the first book by Gretchen Archer that I have listened to and I don't think I will try another.

"Great Mystery with a few problems"
Where does Double Whammy rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Above average. Great, but had a few plot holes.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Double Whammy?

When Davis was in her condo trying to take apart slot machines.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

When a job opportunity pops up for Davis Way to get out of Pine Apple, Alabama, she jumps at the chance to become plain clothes security for Bellismo Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. Her first job: to uncover a corruption regarding the slot machine: Double Whammy, Deuces Wild. Everything is going great until her ex-ex husband, Eddie Crawford and her employer’s wife, Bianca Sanders turn out to be in the heart of the problem. To make matters worse, Davis is a double for Bianca and her immediate supervisor, Natalie, seems to be behind it all. When a case of mistaken identity and an attempted murder get pinned on her, Davis finds herself in the slammer with no way to get help from her family. With no one else to turn to but her landlord lawyer, Bradley Cole, Davis must figure out a way to clear her name or wind up going to prison for something she didn’t do for a very long time. Will she succeed?

Narrator, Dina Pearlman has an entertaining, southern drawl that brings a unique dimension to Archer’s characters. The plot is well-developed and draws the reader into Davis Way’s world easily. Although the story drags in a few places, the book moves at a steady pace. The narrative style is clear with smooth transitions. Although it’s hard to believe that a former cop would touch a suspicious gun without gloves on is hard to believe, but the humor and light-hearted nature of the book makes up for this oversight. Overall, I give it 4 out of 5 stars. The story had a few holes and part that weren’t very believable, but the plot was easy to follow and entertaining.

"Fun book and a quick read!"
Where does Double Whammy rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Cute book, a little bit of fluff but a fun read. Light reading; will definitely pick up her next book for another quick read.

    "Skip it"

I rarely give a poor review, but this book was terrible. I read the entire book because I wanted to give it every opportunity to get better. The heroine was exceedingly stupid, yet we were expected to believe it when she came up with brilliant, complicated plans. For example, she has a master's degree in criminal justice and computer programming, was a police officer (fired), and yet she broke into an office and couldn't resist picking up a gun that she found. It went off and blew a big hole in the wall. She blamed the person who owned the gun because the safety should have been on. She also left her fingerprints on the gun. In another example, when a security person made a comment about sweeping the room (meaning to debug it), she kept thinking he was talking about an actual broom. Duh!
