What the Critics Say

"Funny & wonderful & human. It gets the Stephanie Plum seal of approval." (Janet Evanovich)

"Archer navigates a satisfyingly complex plot and injects plenty of humor as she goes. This madcap debut is a winning hand for fans of Janet Evanovich and Deborah Coonts." (Library Journal)

"Another excellent reading by Dina Pearlman"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would be comfortable recommending this to any fan of cozy mysteries. While there is some romantic tension and violence, it does not proceed beyond a level acceptible for most cozy mystery lovers. I also continue to enjoy the reading/performance of Dina Pearlman. I have listened to many of her other audiobooks and find that she is consistently excellent.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Double Whammy?

Davis's encounters with Maxine and Mary at the Double Whammy machines. i also enjoyed Teeth and No Hair in all their intimidating glory.

Which character – as performed by Dina Pearlman – was your favorite?

Morgan George Sr.was my favorite character beyond Davis.

    Any additional comments?

Hoping that Double Dip will also make its way to audio.

    "Entertaining story. Awesome narrator."
Would you listen to Double Whammy again? Why?

Yes. Because some of the character's thoughts are so funny. I would enjoy listening again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Davis Way. Because of her name, where she is from, her personality and sarcasm.

Which character – as performed by Dina Pearlman – was your favorite?

    Davis Way, definitely.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Just entertaining overall. The author and narrator did a great job making me feel the characters and understand their thoughts/actions.

    Any additional comments?

Can't wait for the next book in the series! Please keep Dina Pearlman as the narrator -- she IS Davis Way.

"Hilarious fun! Can't wait for more"

I totally enjoyed this book! It was so funny. Davis Way is a little bit pathetic (but in a funny way), quite ingenious and completely hilarious. I am so glad that I stumbled upon this book here on audible and decided to give it a try. I bought the kindle book (well worth the $2.99) and the discounted audible book (also well worth the money or the credit). Dina Perlman does a great job narrating but the book reads well in print, too (I mostly listened to it but did read some of it). I will definitely be watching out for the next book in this series. I hope they do an audible version of that one, as well.

    "Absolutely FANTASTIC!"

I had already read and reviewed this book on Amazon and Goodreads when it first came out when I got this opportunity to listen to it on audio. Not only is this a wonderfully funny story, but I thoroughly enjoyed the narration and the narrator's ability to use different voices for the characters. I listened to this over a two-day period and never once got lost in thought during the process. To me, that is high praise indeed!

"Top notch writing, story line and characters"
What made the experience of listening to Double Whammy the most enjoyable?

Dina Pearlman's ability to give life to the book. Her reading style may not come across in the sample, but she'll grow on you. Trust me. She's good.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Double Whammy?

Hard to nail that down...I love the sarcasm the most. It's appropriate and funny. Which makes my day more enjoyable as it puts me in a good mood.

What does Dina Pearlman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She adds inflections to words, like when people are irritated, you hear it in her voice. I don't have to imagine it as I would when reading.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I loved it. Yes, I laughed. Actually out loud. It's a roller coaster ride of tension, fun, intrigue and a few "awww" moments.

    Any additional comments?

Double Whammy is an enjoyable novel, pure and simple. I recommend the entire series to anyone who is looking for a book with a huge dose of humor, sarcasm, wit and awkward family relationships (as tends to happen in real life).
After I’d purchased each book that Gretchen Archer has written (as they were released), I have now also bought the series on Audible, to listen to when I’m relaxing. The audio format brings a new aspect to books.
I listened carefully to the sample, paying attention to the narrator.
Some Audible narrators are great, some are good and some…I walk away from. As for Dina Pearlman, honestly, I wasn’t sure after listening to the sample. But since I absolutely love Ms Archer’s writing style and the Davis Way character, I trusted and forged ahead. I’m so glad I did.
It only took a few minutes for me to settle in to listening to Dina Pearlman and to realize that she grasped Davis Way’s character quite well. She reads the book with a dry wit that reflects the tone of the story. I love her voice, style and the inflections she reads with, making the book come alive.
As to the story itself, I think it deserves the highest accolades possible. Gretchen Archer writes pure enjoyment. This book is a prime example of why I read books.
The main character, Davis Way, is funny, flawed, passionate, smart and determined. She is also bedeviled by her ex-ex-husband, Eddie, and his random appearances in her trying-to-get-myself-back-on-track life. To her credit, she does not just shoot him dead right in the middle of the casino.
As a great many of us can relate to, Eddie epitomizes everything that is just so wrong with our exes…he’s alive, he’s stolen from us, he’s still good looking, and he’s in the way, irritating the bejeezus out of us.
The writing style of Double Whammy is an absolute pleasure. I giggle aloud at some of the sarcastic asides in the narrative. The story flows well, the plot contains enough subterfuge and enough gunplay to keep us spy-wannabes happy (while safe in our homes).
We are taken on a five-star ride through the Belissimo, through the luxury resort accommodations, the non-stop gaming, the back areas that a guest would never experience, and the thieves who masquerade as guests while trying to leave with millions in their pockets. The bad guys are not one-dimensional evil incarnate, but normal people who have succumbed to a human temptation: greed.
Davis does do some silly things, but there are reasons for them and they’re funny, people. She may just be exhausted, having been up for thirty hours working towards solving a crime or she may just be distracted/overwhelmed/stressed by numerous people/plot points that I will not reveal in this review. Whatever. Davis Way’s foibles make it a better, more delightful book.
Davis Way is a refreshing character, a true gem hidden in the thick of the mystery genre, which is populated with way too many insipid, nauseating and plain annoying protagonists. Let me make this clear: Davis Way is none of those things. I want to be Davis Way, (Except I’d get worn out in three hours of her life.) Advice: buy the book, read the book, enjoy the book and get ready to laugh.

    "An enjoyable listen/read"

With the ineptness of a Stephanie Plum, Davis Way is a very funny character who should probably never have access to a gun. Her family is dysfunctional as ate her former inlaws. She stumbles through everything and somehow comes out on top.

    Any additional comments?

If you enjoy Janet Evanovich's "Stephanie a Plum" series, you ought to enjoy this book, and vice versa. The plot is good, it's not overly long, the humor of the main character is just snarky enough. There aren't any villainous characters making surprise entrances at the end to frustrate your logic. Still, I just wasn't sure who done it until the reveal. Excellent read when you get tired of Kafka works :-). Enjoy yourself.

Would you consider the audio edition of Double Whammy to be better than the print version?

For me, this was fantastic. It made my morning walks go so much faster. I wanted to walk even further so I could keep listening!

Who would not love Davis? She is smart, witty, and you never know her next step.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Could not pick just one. But, the end was priceless!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Are you kidding me? I could not stop laughing..

"Fun book and a quick read!"
Where does Double Whammy rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Cute book, a little bit of fluff but a fun read. Light reading; will definitely pick up her next book for another quick read.
