Publisher's Summary

Spenser is forced by loyalty into an alien world where violence is a way of lie and outsiders enter at a lethal risk. When Spenser's cohort, Hawk, is hired by the tenants of a gang-plagued Boston housing project known as "Double Deuce", he enlists his friend's aid.

A friend's girl and her infant daughter have been gunned down. Though the act at first appears to be an accidental drive-by shooting, it soon becomes clear that it was premeditated murder. Before they can solve the crime, Spenser and Hawk must take on an adolescent band of hardened urban warriors. As bullets fly and the brutality escalates, Spenser learns more than he ever dreamed about a generation imprisoned in a hell of poverty and hopelessness where muscle is the ticket to survival, and the surest way out is in a body bag.

Pulsing with moral complexity, Double Deuce is the kind of no-holds-barred action thriller only Robert B. Parker can create.

Crack another case with Spenser.

What the Critics Say

"The plot is nothing new - it might be described as Spenser meets New Jack City - but Deuce 's snappy dialogue, timely, fast-paced action and quick characterizations make it classic Spenser." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Good Story, Lousy reader"

It was difficult to continue listening to this story because of the reader. His idea of voices for the black characters was embarassing.

    "Good story, terrible reading"

The Spenser series that include Hawk are usually the best, but the reading of this one is horrible. Susan is channelling Scarlet O'Hara and Hawk is read as Stephen Fetchit. Normally a good reader, but obviously unaware of the characters.

Good story. I don't like this reader. He doesn't get Spencer or Silverman or Hawk...

    "Terrible reading"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No. The reader, David Duke, is beyond horrible. One of the things I appreciate about a good reader is how he handles Hawk. Duke makes him sound like a skinny, little guy. He also did a horrible job with Belsen.

What did you like best about this story?

    A pretty good storyline

How could the performance have been better?

    A good reader

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    No

"Narrator bad fit for this series"
Would you try another book from Robert B. Parker and/or David Dukes?

This is the 18th audio book I've listened to in this series. The narrator is not a good fit. Many times his cadence is that of Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Starship Enterprise...quick then pause for dramatic effect several times within a sentence. It worked for William Shatner but not this series. Also...he has taken the deep sexy smooth voice of Hawke (as performed by the previous narrator Michael Prichard and the TV series with Avery Brooks) to a nasal, high pitched southern accent.

In my opinion, audio books need to meet two primary criterion, 1) good story; 2) good narrator. If they don't have both...I won't be back for another. I like series...I loved the TV show with Robert Urich and Avery Brooks. I like the audio book series up to this book. I had intended on buying/listening to all 40 books in the series. I won't be purchasing another one after this.

Very disappointed with the choice of narrator.

"Good story but the narrator doesn't get the voice"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator in this case really did not catch the dignity in Hawkes voice or other voices. We couldn't get past the first 10 minutes due to that

What other book might you compare Double Deuce to and why?

The other Spenser narrators do a much better job

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Dukes?

Michael Pritchard or Joe Montegna (sp?)

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointed, love the Spenser and Stone books but just couldn't get into this one due to the narration

    "Story ok, the performance disappoints."

I was looking forward to this latest recording and must say I was disappointed. Not as much by the story, but the performance. I was appalled at how poorly the Hawk voice was performed. The actor spoke as if Hawk was a TV pimp or ghetto character. Anyone that is fan of series would be disappointed. The story was ok, actually gave a few glimpses into Hawk's life that were interesting --- but I could not get past the voice.

    "Disappointing"

I love the Spenser series, but this one disappointed. Not so much the story, but the reading of the story. Usually I'm sad at the ending of a Robert B. Parker novel, because I've enjoyed the book so much. The voices of the various characters in this one were so awful I couldn't wait for this book to end. Michael Prichard is not only missed as the reader of this one, David Dukes ruined it, in my opinion. I recommend reading the book yourself.

"David Dukes is wrong for this"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I love this book, its one of my favourites of RBP but David Dukes delivery of Hawk is terrible, i only managed about 6 minutes before I had enough. Hawk is a tough talking, strong african American male yet in this David Dukes makes him sound like a 12 year old girl. TERRIBLE, dont waste your money on any RBP Books that he narrates.

What didn’t you like about David Dukes’s performance?

Poor delivery and interpretation of characters

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointed completely
