    "Wrong Narrator listed?"

I own a number of Ngaio Marsh audiobooks featuring several narrators. This one, unless I am badly mistaken -- or unless the two women have nearly identical voices -- is actually performed by Nadia May, not Wanda McCaddon. This is a good thing, because Nadia May is immensely talented and her narrations are always among my favorites.

    "Very good!"

An enjoyable Ngaio Marsh, set in New Zealand in WWII. Roderick Alleyn is the central character - he left his wife at home in England in this one. The book sports interesting details of the wool industry in New Zealand and some really first rate descriptive writing. Very good narration by Nadia May.

    "Read too rapidly"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This could possibly be a 4 or 5 star listen if the narrator spoke more slowly and there weren't so many characters.

Would you ever listen to anything by Ngaio Marsh again?

Yes I really enjoy Ngaio Marsh and am sad to give her a one star rating.

Would you be willing to try another one of Wanda McCaddon’s performances?

I do not plan to listen to Wanda McCaddon if she reads as quickly in other books. Her voice is pleasant for listening, her different accents are well-done, but she reads as if she is racing the clock in this book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I was disappointed because I was looking forward to hearing another Ngaio Marsh novel.

    Any additional comments?

I tried changing my device setting to "slower" but the sound was distorted at the slower speed.

    "Excellent book"
Would you listen to Died in the Wool again? Why?

yes--after I had forgotten the plot. It is beautifully written with well-developed, believable characters and memorable descriptions of New Zealand.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Somewhat. It isn't a thriller, wasn't written as such.

What about Wanda McCaddon’s performance did you like?

    It was ok.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The descriptions of the high country.

    Any additional comments?

    This author can write!

    "Another culture exposed!"
What did you love best about Died in the Wool?

Learning about life on a sheep ranch in the antipodes. Author's prose is evocative, dialog believable, and attention to detail remarkable. Her favorite verb: ejaculate.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Died in the Wool?

Well, picturing that body compacted into a bale of wool, I'd say. Author doesn't have a weak stomach, that's for sure.

    Any additional comments?

Anyone who's written so many books can't *always* be on, but even when she's not at (what you might consider) her absolute best, her books never disappoint.

    "Character Driven Mystery"

Ngaio Marsh should be better known. Her books are perfect time pieces. This one is set in WWII New Zealand. The detective is investigating two interlinked mysteries a death and a spy. The details of the place bring you into the room as the characters discuss the personality of the dead woman and the reading is pitch perfect with each character given a distinct voice.

"Not the best of Inspector Alleyn"
What did you like best about Died in the Wool? What did you like least?

I thought the story was rather slow and it all seemed to be told in the second hand... it never really seemed to fall into a comfortable pace. I kept waiting for something to happen but really just ended up bored.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was welcomed - if only because it meant the book was over. It was a bit of a surprise but by the time I got there I really didn't care.

Which character – as performed by Wanda McCaddon – was your favorite?

I'm not crazy about Wanda McCaddon doing any of the characters. It was hard to tell them apart.

Could you see Died in the Wool being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

NO. It would not be worth the effort.

    Any additional comments?

I love this series so I would encourage anyone to read it, but I was not very impressed with this book.

    "Wooly"

Doesn't really work. Found it a struggle to persist with. Kiwi accent became very grating. Contrived.
