New York Times best-selling author Karen Rose is back with her 14th pulse-pounding thriller.
Best be nimble, best be quick, I’m right here and you’re my pick.…
Baltimore prosecutor Daphne Montgomery pulled herself out of a damaged past to build a solid life for herself and her son. But after she helps convict a killer, her confidence is shattered once again by the news that her son has been kidnapped.
Daphne believes it’s connected to the recent high-profile trial, and at first FBI special agent Joseph Carter agrees. But together they find the reality even more troubling, and it runs deeper than Daphne fears. With her son’s life in jeopardy, she must unlock a dreadful secret about her past and confront a truth that will change everything for those closest to her—and, if she survives, threaten the lives of everyone she loves.

"Intense, complex, and unforgettable." (James Patterson)
"Interspersed with scenes of horror and cruelty, sometimes graphic, sometimes implied, are scenes of love and tenderness. The book is filled with a multitude of stories, and the author handles the interconnected segments with skill." (Kirkus Reviews)
Listen mostly to urban fantasy and suspense/thrillers but also enjoy mysteries, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, adventure, classic, modern, spiritual or general literature. And I always like a bit of romance in any of my stories.
I was somewhat disappointed in "No One Left to Tell" (the previous book in this series). It wasn't that it was a bad book but there was a stretch where I just kept waiting for the story to get moving. I thought it would have been a better book had it been shorter. So it was with some trepidation that I started this book since it is even longer. I needn't have worried. Karen Rose once again weaves an intricate story filled with suspense and a lot of back story. The pacing is perfect. Information about the past is given in tantalizing bits keeping you wanting more while at the same time you want to keep listening to find out what's happening in the present. The book went fast and was over all too soon. Marguerite Gavin's performance was excellent as always. The only reason I marked down the performance was because the production didn't seem up to the high quality of most of the books she has performed. There were many places where they had obviously done editing with multiple takes. This happens in other books too but in this book it seems the producers made no attempt to match the character voices so it almost seemed someone else was speaking in the middle of a sentence. It was somewhat distracting to have to figure out from context that the speaker hadn't changed. Overall though, still a great listen.
love to read
I did not read the print version, but this was outstanding.
The twists and turns were wonderful. The plot was excellent. Karen Rose is a mastermind.
The voicing of , "I'm back...Did you Miss me?" I can see Beckett's twisted face as he leans down and whispers this to his victims.
I'm Back.... Did you Miss me?
I listen to a book a week. I happened on this book by accident. The story starts out slow but it engages you quickly. Very good Read.

Lover of good cops and robbers books, Anne Tyler, Robert Parker, Dennis Lehane, James Lee Burke.
I thought this was a mystery/thriller not a romance novel. The main story is very good and could have been great with a male narrator and some editing. I'm not used to reading graphic and sappy sex scenes in the books of my favorite mystery authors. And I truly doubt that a real person, on the day of their son's kidnapping/possible murder and other assorted deaths, would be obsessed about boinking anybody much less doing it.
If Michael Connolly re-wrote this story, it would sell a gazillion copies because the story is stellar.
Listen authors, 90% of the time if there are two or more male main characters, use a male narrator. Men can do women better than women can narrate as a man. This narrator was awful in the male characters. I almost returned this book for that reason but the story hooked me into finishing it.
Almost a very good book.
I like Karen Rose and I enjoy detailed settings but I can not get into this book. Sad because I was hoping to see a great and longer book from Karen, Yawn, this is not it!
