New York Times best-selling author Karen Rose is back with her 14th pulse-pounding thriller.
Best be nimble, best be quick, I’m right here and you’re my pick.…
Baltimore prosecutor Daphne Montgomery pulled herself out of a damaged past to build a solid life for herself and her son. But after she helps convict a killer, her confidence is shattered once again by the news that her son has been kidnapped.
Daphne believes it’s connected to the recent high-profile trial, and at first FBI special agent Joseph Carter agrees. But together they find the reality even more troubling, and it runs deeper than Daphne fears. With her son’s life in jeopardy, she must unlock a dreadful secret about her past and confront a truth that will change everything for those closest to her—and, if she survives, threaten the lives of everyone she loves.

"Intense, complex, and unforgettable." (James Patterson)
"Interspersed with scenes of horror and cruelty, sometimes graphic, sometimes implied, are scenes of love and tenderness. The book is filled with a multitude of stories, and the author handles the interconnected segments with skill." (Kirkus Reviews)
Listen mostly to urban fantasy and suspense/thrillers but also enjoy mysteries, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, adventure, classic, modern, spiritual or general literature. And I always like a bit of romance in any of my stories.
I was somewhat disappointed in "No One Left to Tell" (the previous book in this series). It wasn't that it was a bad book but there was a stretch where I just kept waiting for the story to get moving. I thought it would have been a better book had it been shorter. So it was with some trepidation that I started this book since it is even longer. I needn't have worried. Karen Rose once again weaves an intricate story filled with suspense and a lot of back story. The pacing is perfect. Information about the past is given in tantalizing bits keeping you wanting more while at the same time you want to keep listening to find out what's happening in the present. The book went fast and was over all too soon. Marguerite Gavin's performance was excellent as always. The only reason I marked down the performance was because the production didn't seem up to the high quality of most of the books she has performed. There were many places where they had obviously done editing with multiple takes. This happens in other books too but in this book it seems the producers made no attempt to match the character voices so it almost seemed someone else was speaking in the middle of a sentence. It was somewhat distracting to have to figure out from context that the speaker hadn't changed. Overall though, still a great listen.
I have enjoyed many of Karen's novels but this had way too many people and went a tad too long. By the end I was wanted to just reach in and kill 'him' already so we could move on. Still I plan to listen or read other novels by Karen Rose and the audio performance was great.
What was with the voice changes in the middle of the sentence on the same characters? Was it necessary to identify the date and the time each and every time during certain chapters even if it was at this on the same day?
I listen to a book a week. I happened on this book by accident. The story starts out slow but it engages you quickly. Very good Read.

Hi!!!!!!! I love audible!!!! P.s. I am not the dog that I chose as my avatar. I just don't know how to 'upload' pictures onto an iPad.
I really enjoyed this book! Karen Rose had written another novel with these characters - (I was very happy when I found it!) She wrote this one while switching the main characters, bringing them to the forefront and telling their story, while still keeping the full cast included as supporting characters. It was very well done. It has parts that were brutal to hear - when she is writing about the "bad guys" and describing their actions. However, it balances out overall because the other characters are compelling and she writes in a brilliant way that makes you care about them. This is a long book and it held my attention the entire time - I listened to it (20+ hours) in less than two days! It's cleverly written with enjoyably unexpected plot twists. The narrator was very good and added to the listening experience rather than detracting anything from the book. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the Romantic Suspense genre. ☑️As soon as I submit this review, I intend to go onto the Audio store site to see if there is another book in this "series" (whichever one is next in order) available to purchase. Fingers crossed - because If there is, I'll be listening to it as soon as I can get it downloaded and press play! (⭐️I highly recommend listening to the earlier books with these characters first - in the order they were written. I don't know if she is officially calling it a "series" but that seems to be an accurate description.) Enjoy!
love to read
I did not read the print version, but this was outstanding.
The twists and turns were wonderful. The plot was excellent. Karen Rose is a mastermind.
The voicing of , "I'm back...Did you Miss me?" I can see Beckett's twisted face as he leans down and whispers this to his victims.
I'm Back.... Did you Miss me?
I'm not sure. Obviously from the reviews people do enjoy this writer and narrator. It just wasn't for me.
It has certainly turned me off this particular author.
I found her voices were all the same. Some sounded completely devoid of range when speaking. If there hadn't been a he said or she said when someone was talking I wouldn't have know who was speaking.
Can't think of any.
If readers are looking for a good series try JD Robb's In Death series. Excellent story lines and excellent narrator Susan Ericksen. She has a terrific range of different voices and Roake?? Well I'd sure like to meet him!! Fantastic character!!
Enjoyed it & couldn't put it down. Not sure if it's an insult or a compliment, but I read a Rose novel before this one, and all though I liked it as well. It was very close to this story.
