What the Critics Say

Listen mostly to urban fantasy and suspense/thrillers but also enjoy mysteries, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, adventure, classic, modern, spiritual or general literature. And I always like a bit of romance in any of my stories.

    "She's Baaack"

I was somewhat disappointed in "No One Left to Tell" (the previous book in this series). It wasn't that it was a bad book but there was a stretch where I just kept waiting for the story to get moving. I thought it would have been a better book had it been shorter. So it was with some trepidation that I started this book since it is even longer. I needn't have worried. Karen Rose once again weaves an intricate story filled with suspense and a lot of back story. The pacing is perfect. Information about the past is given in tantalizing bits keeping you wanting more while at the same time you want to keep listening to find out what's happening in the present. The book went fast and was over all too soon. Marguerite Gavin's performance was excellent as always. The only reason I marked down the performance was because the production didn't seem up to the high quality of most of the books she has performed. There were many places where they had obviously done editing with multiple takes. This happens in other books too but in this book it seems the producers made no attempt to match the character voices so it almost seemed someone else was speaking in the middle of a sentence. It was somewhat distracting to have to figure out from context that the speaker hadn't changed. Overall though, still a great listen.

I have enjoyed many of Karen's novels but this had way too many people and went a tad too long. By the end I was wanted to just reach in and kill 'him' already so we could move on. Still I plan to listen or read other novels by Karen Rose and the audio performance was great.

What was with the voice changes in the middle of the sentence on the same characters? Was it necessary to identify the date and the time each and every time during certain chapters even if it was at this on the same day?

    "Loved this book! 👍👍👍👍👍"

I really enjoyed this book! Karen Rose had written another novel with these characters - (I was very happy when I found it!) She wrote this one while switching the main characters, bringing them to the forefront and telling their story, while still keeping the full cast included as supporting characters. It was very well done. It has parts that were brutal to hear - when she is writing about the "bad guys" and describing their actions. However, it balances out overall because the other characters are compelling and she writes in a brilliant way that makes you care about them. This is a long book and it held my attention the entire time - I listened to it (20+ hours) in less than two days! It's cleverly written with enjoyably unexpected plot twists. The narrator was very good and added to the listening experience rather than detracting anything from the book. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the Romantic Suspense genre. ☑️As soon as I submit this review, I intend to go onto the Audio store site to see if there is another book in this "series" (whichever one is next in order) available to purchase. Fingers crossed - because If there is, I'll be listening to it as soon as I can get it downloaded and press play! (⭐️I highly recommend listening to the earlier books with these characters first - in the order they were written. I don't know if she is officially calling it a "series" but that seems to be an accurate description.) Enjoy!

Would you consider the audio edition of Did You Miss Me? to be better than the print version?

I did not read the print version, but this was outstanding.

What did you like best about this story?

The twists and turns were wonderful. The plot was excellent. Karen Rose is a mastermind.

What does Marguerite Gavin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The voicing of , "I'm back...Did you Miss me?" I can see Beckett's twisted face as he leans down and whispers this to his victims.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I'm Back.... Did you Miss me?

    "Did You Miss Me?"
    Any additional comments?

Did You Miss Me? is a procedural narrated by Marguerite Gavin and quite long, close to 21 hours of listening. The childhood trauma of abduction comes back to haunt a beautiful young state’s attorney. Her son is abducted by the same bad-ass and she is assisted by a handsome FBI agent. There is the requisite love story that blooms between the attorney and the FBI agent. Might have been a better story without this - I wound up fast-forwarding through some eye-rolling mawkishness that distracted from the story. That’s the basic thrust of Did You Miss Me?

It’s a pretty decent procedural, albeit more convoluted than necessary. Eliminating some characters would make the story much more listenable. The fundamental concept of the story is good - but, at minimum the book is 10 hours too long. Wordy and verbose.

I’m usually pretty easily to please with regard to narrators. So, it’s difficult for me to pan the work of Gavin. The male lead voice is terrible … not just a lower male voice created by a female reader, but - a growl - and he always sounded angry. Very annoying. The female lead voice was ‘damsel in distress’ whiney-shaky most of the time - also annoying.

I’m a fan of Karen Rose, but this isn’t one of her best efforts … too complex. The audiobook is not recommended, maybe you’d enjoy the printed version.

    "Dreadful!"
What would have made Did You Miss Me? better?

First review in 6 years of Audible, but just had to write because this book is awful. Sometimes performance is bad, sometimes book, but this book is bad all round. The writing is like a bad, sappy, laugh-out-loud, romance novel and the performance is really sub par for any audible book, and I've listened to hundreds.

What didn’t you like about Marguerite Gavin’s performance?

    She was very bad!!

    "Terrible"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Bad story line. Predictable. Performance makes a poorly written book worse. Had to stop listening to it.

Would you ever listen to anything by Karen Rose again?

    NO

How could the performance have been better?

Be more appropriate to the character.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    No
