So they hit the road, and when their car breaks down in Arkansas, they make plans to take someone else's. Then things get messy and they wind up killing someone - an experience that stokes a fierce, wild desire in Ella-Loo. A desire for Darryl. And a desire to kill again.

As they cross state lines on their way to New York to find the life they think they deserve, they will leave a trail of evil behind them. But now they've landed in the jurisdiction of Lieutenant Dallas and her team at the New York Police and Security Department. "Eve & Roarke face the worst yet"

Devoted in Death was one of the more graphically violent ones to date. And you know it's bad when it shakes Dallas & Roarke. I fast forward through the descriptive torture scenes. Mavis was "off stage" and was missed along with Bella. A visiting deputy was a great addition and I hope he stays.
Still I'm glad I listened to it, because it showed new sides to the homicide department. It was actually fun to see Baxter a basket case over Trueheart's detective exam.

    "Time for a change"

This theme seems to be worn out and the book was very much like the others ....just different names. I've enjoyed all the books until now. I hope Nora can come up with something more original with the next one. I also think it's about time Eve began getting past her youth since she has so much going for her now.

    "Dueling Devotions"

I loved the contrasting expressions of "Devotion in Death," comparing the relationships of Eve and Roarke with Darryl and Ella-Loo. It's nice to see, over the span of several books, Eve becoming more comfortable with expressing the love she shares with Roarke. There were a lot of nice little moments - with Baxter, with Feeney, with Truehart. Loved the visiting deputy from Arkansas. Kudos to J D Robb and Susan Ericksen for another great book in the series. If you're new to the series, you'll be able to enjoy this book. There's a lot of back story that would make some parts clearer, but I think it stands alone much more than some of the others.

"Excellent but not enough Roarke. PLS a TV series"
Would you consider the audio edition of Devoted in Death to be better than the print version?

Without a doubt. Just reading them you can't hear the accents or least I don't think I could. Now after listening to them all. Reading is more entertaining. This is probably the finest narrator I've ever listen to. I do read Eve a little different at times. I know it's part of her personality to be hard. But not as often as in the audio. On the flipside she brings so much more richness to Roarke

What other book might you compare Devoted in Death to and why?

I don't have a comparison. If you read or listened from the first one you're hooked. I listened to my first end of July and it's middle of September and I've gone through all 41. Can't believe I have to wait six more months.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A film couldn't cut it they need a series. Preferably Amazon and PLEASE HURRY

    Any additional comments?

I don't usually write reviews. This one just did not have enough Roarke. I enjoyed the other characters and hopefully this was to set new characters for the future. I love Eve and the rest of the group. And hopefully we will have a new addition from the South. I would like to see JD write a few novels with Roarke as the lead character. JD has made him a very rich character that seems to me has not been explored nearly enough. I think it would be a nice twist and also help to keep the series fresh. I think we all have a little bit of a crush on him. Probably even the men. Why hasn't someone made a TV series from these books. There are several actresses to play Eve. Lisa Renna has the eyes I think. And in my mind she looks a lot like her. But can not think of anyone to play Roarke. Possibly a bit of a Brad Pitt type with black hair. There are plenty of pretty boys to play that part but they just don't have the eyes. For us fans although I am a new one not getting him right would blow the series if they were to do one. My guess if there is someone looking at it it would be Amazon. I'm keeping my eyes open. I would like to mention that I listened to my first book in the series in mid July. It's September 16 and I've gone through all of them and just finished the last one that's available.. Now just like all of the long-term fans I have to wait six months! I am so addicted that I have started to reread the series. So for anyone that has not put their toe in the water I suggest you try. I think these appeal to everyone. A little heavy on the sex scenes however a very important part of who Eve & Roarke are.. So if you're not up to it you can just skip it.
Also they have the best narrator that I've ever heard.

    "Went too far"

I have read and then listened to all the books in the series, and I love Nora/JD but this storyline took it a bit too far. This is the first time I had to fast forward because I couldn't stomach the details. Also, Susan's (narrator) Roarke was a bit off for the first time. The voice was slightly different.

    "Riveting"

I cannot believe this is book number forty-one in the series. I wonder how Robb can keep coming up with interesting and different stories. In this story Robb does something completely different from her other books in the series. In this one we the readers know who the killers are and get to see into their depraved minds right from the beginning. The reader has an advantage over Dallas and team who start with nothing but a dead body. The readers also meet the next victims and we wonder will Dallas and team put the pieces together in time to save the next victims. The sense of urgency builds as does the tension and suspense through the story.

In this story we miss many of the usual characters of the series but are introduced to an interesting character the Arkansas police office Will Banner who has been on the killer’s trail all the way from Arkansas. I wonder if Dallas will hire Banner and he might become a regular member of the team. I enjoyed this different twist to the usual Dallas story and it did keep things fresh for episode forty-one in the series. In the next book I hope Robb brings back all of my favorite characters. Needless to say the book is well written, fast paced, with lots of suspense and some humor. Susan Ericksen does a great job narrating the series.

"Another Great Entry in Eve Dallas Series"
Where does Devoted in Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Another one of the top ones - but I have so many on the top shelf, books are starting to cascade off!
I love the Eve Dallas series. I wasn't sure I'd like this one based on the description -- I expected to follow psycho Bonnie & Clyde state by state until they finally reached NY - butthe action started fast in NY & the book was excellent. I never even knew the first victim in life but found myself caring deeply about him.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Devoted in Death?

When the female victim tried to plot with the male victim to trick their sadistic captors and told him she would be screaming and begging him to stop but this was just to satisfy their captors and that he should not stop for his own sake and for hers. She was determined to survive.
Thank goodness for the comic relief of the NYC cops sent out West to gather background on the perps. Yee-haw!

    Which scene was your favorite?

Ella Loo & Darryl's ultimate capture was very satisfying, as was every clue along the way - the video from the loading dock, the voice caught on the cell phone...

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Thrill killers pick the wrong city to continue their gory swath - Eve's city.

    Any additional comments?

I'm fairly sure I wrote this review before - right after I finished the book - and something must have misfired. I read the book almost a month ago and a fair number of books have intervened. But I must add I LOVE Banner! He was a wonderful addition to the book, a down-home, folksy, but smart & dedicated Southern officer. I hope he appears in future Eve Dallas books!

    "Not my favorite performance."

I love the In Death series by JD Robb. I've read them all and can't wait to get my hands on the newest one as soon as it is released. I usually alternate between reading and listening to fit it into my busy schedule. This performance had me cringing a little. Most of the "voices" are dead on the money, but the portrayal of one of the major characters is so annoying it almost prevents me from listening to it every time. This isn't the first time I've reviewed a performance of an In Death book and have always said the same. The "voice" of Detective Peabody is so off the mark that it sounds like the character should be an eight-year old little boy. I'm afraid that if it doesn't change, this will be my last In Death on Audible. I can barely read the book now without hearing that ridiculous voice in my head.

Erickson creates believable psychopaths and description of what they are thinking and why. Believable futuristic electronics and police case-solving tactics.

    "Not the best"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

    So-So

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

    VERY violent.

What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?

Like someone else said...She seemed a bit "off' this time although it was not bad, just not her best.

Could you see Devoted in Death being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    Sure..no idea.

    Any additional comments?

I like this author but did not really like this one that much.

i've had a break for a couple of months after spending the past year going through the whole series (and just downloading the next one). i think that I will be going straight to that now to get the next fix.
Compelling listening from start to finish with good character development with the sub stories (Trueheart etc).
The murder scenes may change a little in nature but the stories are getting better as the characters develop because there is now more of a back story as the detective and friends families grow.
Can't wait to start the next one (in about 10 minutes once it downloads to my phone.

I enjoyed this book. The Deputy being there was great. I knew Eve was going to end up with him in the house. That was good him seeing the house and how she works. The story was intense and reminded me of a previous book with the tortured victims but I still enjoyed it.

Once again a fabulous book off JD Robb can you get a bad book off her? I don't think so. This book is suitable for all murder mystery fans as she writes is such a way that you don't feel you have to read all the others to understand the story. A truly fabulous series.
