Publisher's summary

Anna Pigeon, a ranger for the U.S. Park Services, sets off on vacation - an autumn canoe trip into the Iron Range in upstate Minnesota. With Anna is her friend Heath, a paraplegic; Heath’s 15-year-old daughter, Elizabeth; Leah, a wealthy designer of outdoor equipment; and her daughter, Katie, who is 13. For Heath and Leah, this is a shakedown cruise to test a new cutting-edge line of camping equipment. The equipment, designed by Leah, will make camping and canoeing more accessible to disabled outdoorsmen. On their second night out, Anna goes off on her own for a solo evening float on the Fox River.

When she comes back, she finds that four thugs, armed with rifles, pistols, and knives, have taken the two women and their teenaged daughters captive. With limited resources and no access to the outside world, Anna has only two days to rescue them before her friends are either killed or flown out of the country, in Destroyer Angel by Nevada Barr.

Not up to expectations of Nevada Barr Stories

I've read most of Nevada Barr's books and thoroughly enjoyed her story-telling. This one was disappointing--Not up to her usual standards. The narrator, Barbara Rosenblat, sounded like she had smoked a few too many cigarettes.

Better than average Anna novel.

Barbara Rosenblatt was phenomenal, as usual!
Amazing how she keeps the characters straight. Ms Barr did great with the details once again. It's almost as if the story was a first hand experience.

WOW! Anna is Awesome!

What did you love best about Destroyer Angel?

The ending is FABULOUS!
So was Anna's stalking of the four big bad killers.
I loved the dog, Wily.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Destroyer Angel?

OMG. So many!
The ending. And all the women laughing and sharing the secret.
When Wily is broken by the big leader brick, my heart was in my throat; when one of the thugs goes to kill him & Wily is gone, my heart leapt.
When Anna goes after the first thug with the beard.
When Anna goes after Reg and the prey feels the electricity of the predator.
When Anna saves Katie.
When the fire is under the plane.
When Heath starts yelling, "Stay away!"

Which character – as performed by Barbara Rosenblat – was your favorite?

Anna, always Anna.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I remember A Hard Truth altough I read it long ago & it took me a bit to connect the campers with the paralyzed woman (Heath) who'd been attacked by the gang of kids (one of the Elizabeth) in that book. I vividly remembered what happened to Elizabeth. It was wonderful to see her again and to see her love for her adopted mother.

When Wily was injured I just wanted to jump up & assault one of the monsters - which, given my build and strength, would have been a futile gesture. When Wily disappeared, my heart leapt. When Wily struggled to walk on 3 legs, I struggled with him and was so glad when Anna found a way to carry him. Loved how he listened and seemed to wink at her and howled when necessary. I'm a huge dog lover and Wily added so much to the book for me.

Any additional comments?

In recent years I've found I loved on Anna Pigeon and not been so thrilled with the next. Winter Study wasn't my favorite; Borderline was great! (My heart went out to the cow.) Did NOT like Burn. LOVED The Rope (and it wasn't even read by Barbara Rosenblatt, which put me off for some time.) So I was afraid I wouldn't like Destroyer Angel. It started slowly and I quit a couple times before getting into it. But once I did, WOW. Sucked down on a wild ride like a white-water-rafter who lost her boat. FABULOUS book!!!

Excruciating Plot and Terrible Narration

What disappointed you about Destroyer Angel?

This novel is not what I was expecting from a Nevada Barr novel. I don't know if I was more annoyed by the overwrought composition or the over-emoting narration. The reader's nonsensical phrasing and weird emphasis was distracting at best. Her interpretation of characters was wildly inconsistent. I usually enjoy the setting in an Anna Pigeon story but there didn't seem to be one. Why did I power through to the end? Slight curiosity about how soon everyone would die? This one was a waste of time.

horrible

i have read/listened to all her books with the exception of the one set in New Orleans that was a real stinker...this was so much worse. I wonder if I can get my credit back as I only listened to 4 really bad chapters. I'm shocked that Rosenblat, who has done all her reading agreed to read this dog.

Don't waste a credit, I guarantee you won't finish it.

Another great story by Nevada Barr

I have read all of the Anna Pigeon series and this is another great story in the series. Barbara Rosenblatt brings Anna's character to life in such a way to enable the reader to picture her perfectly in your mind. Keep the stories coming!!!

Narration!!!!!

The story was good. The narration was great!!! Well worth a credit. Some of Nevada Barr's first stories were worth a trip to the library but not so much worth putting out hard cold cash. This story along with the narration done by Barbara Rosenblat was certainly worth a credit at Audible.com. A great listen!

Sorry I bought this

Terribly over-acted by a woman who sounds like a tugboat captain. This may be a good story but I can't finish it.
