Great Story. Monotone narrator

I've read this book many times and wanted to try the audio version. In the future, I will try to remember to avoid anything read by John MacDonald.

Love the book not the Narration

Love Clancy's Ryan series, have for decades. John MacDonald very computer like, almost a robotic monotone in nature. Just finished Sum of All Fears prior to this... Much more depth and emotion conveyed by that narrator.

A Great Book to a Fantastic Series

Tom Clancy always did his homework for accuracy. Those that have kept the Jack Ryan series going have done a fantastic job. The book is worth the cost and time.

Sleepy sounds

John MacDonald was a terrible fit for narrator of this novel. Fought several times to listen through.

great book, good narrator, terrible editor.

Another great addition to the Jack Ryan series. High patriotism, action, and suspense, keeping you glued to it waiting for whats next.

The editor did not do their job. They artificially slowed down the narrator, causing the highs and lows to be cut off, and making it sound monotone and robotic.

You have to speed up the recording to between 1.1 and 1.25 to get back any of the actual narration.

Worse narration I've ever heard

Painful monotone narration for an excellent story. I've listened to artificially generated recordings that sounded better. At times I even thought it was read by a machine.

What a payoff

what separates this book from all of the previous Jack Ryan stories is that, for the first time, Ryan is in a position where he has the trust and authority of the highest levels of government. He faces minimal resistance from naysayers and political hacks, and he is free to do what he does best. the story and intricate conspiracy that creates the conflict is compelling to the point of inspiring actual rage at the antagonists. Clancy sets up a narrative that reveals Ryan as both in economic and foreign policy genius, and pay off at the end is something that fans of the story both can rejoice in, and also be totally surprised about.

Things were progressing with the tale of Jack Ryan to the point where, like many spy novel heroes, there wasn't much left for our beloved protagonist to achieve. In this book, Clancy ensures that the fate of James Bond (endlessly repeating the same save-the-world formula, in the same job, ad infinitum) would not befall Dr Ryan.

One of the best things about these novels is the time that Clancy devotes to developing the supporting characters, both good and evil. Along with his ability to clearly describe profoundly deep and broad complex systems like financial markets and military technology, this is what makes Clancy such a great writer.
