    "good mystery"

starts out slow and somewhat confusing; but once I figured out PD was introducing all of the potential suspects and the victim before the actual crime takes place...I was hooked. The reader is excellent; able to switch voices with ease and keep tempo quite well.

"Jolly Good Read, Well Developed characters"

I have to agree with one of the prior reviewers that too many characters are introduced too quickly in the beginning of the story, some of whom appear at first to be superflous to the story.I had to go back and re-listen to get the characters straight. However once I had sorted out who was who I found the narration excellent (as always with Michael Jayston) and the charcaters developed in depth as the story unfolds. The suspense builds to a good conclusion and I was sorry to lose the characters at the end wanting to continue with their life stories after the "murder".

    "GETTING A BIT DATED"
Would you try another book from P. D. James and/or Michael Jayston?

This early offering from a legendary mystery writer is really starting to look a bit frayed around the edges in our post CSI culture. But obviously, James was a pioneer in writing a book in the 70s that focused on the use of scientific evidence, in fact where the whole murder mystery was set in a laboratory that does just that.

What was most disappointing about P. D. James???s story?

    dated quality

What three words best describe Michael Jayston???s performance?

he's alright but a bit stodgy

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    no

    Any additional comments?

    NA

    "A bit disappointing."

Confusing beginning, weak ending, but some good stuff in between. Some fine bits of descriptive writing worth finding.

    "Excellent!"

A forensic scientist is murdered in his lab and everyone seems to have had a good motive for killing him. An excellent suspenseful Adam Dagliesh novel. It's always a real treat to hear an unabridged PD James beautifully read by Michael Jayston, who is a pleasure to listen to.

    Story
    "Complex or convoluted?"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A judicious editing, Some of the descriptions were laborious and did not add to the story, I did not care how many white shirts the detective wore.
The plot was turgid and the sub plots lacked that spark which made me want to read on. I ceased to care about many of the characters and just wanted to get to the point in the end. I will try another P.D. James but hope it moves faster.

What will your next listen be?

Angela Carter, a pity it is abridged.

What three words best describe Michael Jayston’s performance?

    O.K, fine, adequate.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    The basic story was good.

    "Disappointing"

I downloaded this thinking it was going to be a real thriller. However, it seemed very slow, predictable and one of the first books I have downloaded which has disappointed me. I won't be looking to buy a PD James audio book again I'm afraid.

Well-read, super crime book with an interesting setting, with several cleaver twists, I would highly recommend.

    "Not my favourite Dalgliesh story"

As ever I enjoyed Michael Jayston's reading of the book, but somehow the story didn't engage me as much as others in the series. This is the earliest I've listened to so far and I've tended to enjoy the later ones more. Should I risk going back any further I wonder...?
