Death of Yesterday | [M. C. Beaton]

Death of Yesterday

When a local woman tells Sergeant Hamish Macbeth that she doesn't remember what happened the previous evening, he doesn't begin to worry. She had been out drinking, after all, and he'd prefer not to be bothered with such an arrogant and annoying woman. But when her body is discovered, Hamish is forced to investigate a crime that the only known witness - now dead - had forgotten.

    "Like visiting an old friend"

Hamish Macbeth #29? (2013 addition to the mystery series)

After the first moments of the narrator speaking over harsh jangly intro music, this book was wonderful! I enjoyed Mr. Malcolm's rendition of various accents, and he was able to differentiate among characters without making any of them sound too extreme. The story was up to Beaton's high standards for this series; each book seems like a visit to Lochdubh to see old friends. Having read the first 28 books in only a few months, I am now reduced to waiting a year for each new addition, and it's difficult!

    "Fun, Funny, and Highly Entertaining"
If you could sum up Death of Yesterday in three words, what would they be?

    Amusing, unpredictable, & funny

    Any additional comments?

Graeme Malcolm's performance brings the characters to life.

Hearing the characters speak (in various accents!) makes this (audio)book much more enjoyable than its printed form.

    "Outstanding, as usual."
What did you love best about Death of Yesterday?

Once again, Beaton has written a clever and tangled mystery. But the ever clever Hamish figures it all out, much to the anger of his superiors. Now if he could just get his love life on the right track. Too bad they don't go for bigamy in the Highlands, or maybe it should be a same sex union.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Death of Yesterday?

The revelation that he most beautiful Hannah was all falsies.

What about Graeme Malcolm’s performance did you like?

His character were clear and his accents were wonderful.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Hamish does it again!

    Any additional comments?

They need to bring back the BBC series.

    "Reliable entertainment"

These books have been great escapist fun and I'm going to find it hard to finish the series. There are plenty of murders, but none so real that it is disturbing. It was interesting to see that nasty brother and sister again with the plot of their lives moving forward in a satisfying way. This time, I found I began to care about Hamish's love life, which isn't a wise choice.

"always best when narrated by Graeme Malcolm"

Graeme Malcolm has always managed to set the mood easily and also knows when to throw in quiet humor.

    "Re-run"

MC Beaton needs to stop writing the Hamish Macbeth series if her heart isn't in it. This story feels like deja vu. She seems to have cut an pasted old story lines together in a hodge podge that does not flow. The narration is nice. The story is awful

    "Leave Hamish Be!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

An actual plot line that cohered with the characters.

What could M. C. Beaton have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Spent a LOT of time with an editor; sharpen up the plot; avoid silly, unbelievable turns.

What does Graeme Malcolm bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Had it not been for his voice, which I enjoy, I would have deleted this thing about halfway through.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger at my wasting a credit to buy it!

    Any additional comments?

This book is downright silly. Characters behave in ways that make absolutely no sense to anyone. And so much repetition from previous books! Has this author ever heard of character development? She/he (have no idea if this is a pseudonym) should give up on this series.
