Publisher's summary

Deep within the NSA is Desk Three, a top-secret unit of special operatives inserted into the field when the threat is great and the response demands sensitivity and invisibility. Charlie Dean, a former Marine sniper, is a senior officer. With his colleagues Lia DeFrancesca and newcomer Ilya Akulinin, they form the core of a high-tech team known as Deep Black.

Off the coast of Africa lie the beautiful Canary Islands, a resort destination of millionaires. But underneath this idyllic paradise is one of the most volatile fault lines in the world. There, an alliance between radical Islamic terrorists and a rogue element of the Chinese government is planning to unleash an act of unimaginable geological terrorism that could devastate the U.S. East Coast, striking it with waves up to 1,000 feet high.

In the central Asian Republic of Tajikistan, 12 nuclear warheads, stolen by the Russian Mafia, are about to be smuggled out of the country into the hands of the conspirators. Charlie and Ilya go on an intercept mission, but before they can retrieve them, the weapons disappear.

Lia is sent to Berlin to infiltrate the operations of a ruthless Chinese billionaire, whose machinations have come to the attention of the NSA. She risks immediate execution if her true identity is revealed.

Meanwhile, in a hotel in New Jersey, a best-selling author is assassinated to prevent the release of his stranger-than-fiction story about an Islamic plot to change the course of history.

Their paths all converge in the Canary Islands, where Lia finds herself in the hands of a sadistic torturer. Unless the Deep Black team intervenes, the islands could be the epicenter of apocalypse, with millions of lives - and the entire world order - at stake.

Special ops: listen to another Deep Black thriller.

Another great book in a fun series

Coonts and Keith do it again with the latest edition of the Deep Black series with this book. The narrator does a great job pulling the listener into the action such that you just don't want to turn the book off.

Excellent! A real page turner

Coonts is one of my favorite authors along with Clive Cussler. I think this is one of the best of all the books from both authors. Phil Gigante does a superb job of narrating and keeps you wanting to keep reading! If you like thrillers and mysteries, you'll love this one. One of the other nice things about this, is that you don't have to had read any of the previous books in the series. I give him a lot of credit for that with this being the ninth book. It is Definitely worth a credit and the time to read it. I can't wait to hear what Charlie and Desk 3 get into next. Based on this story, I'm pretty sure it will involve the Chinese. Don't pass this one up!

Not the best Coonts but the story on the whole was

The story on a whole was good – although a couple of moments where characters did things that just seemed too unlikely, to the point where you stopped being absorbed and starting thinking of why. It was too good a story for the convenient easy move of putting a victim in need of rescue during the final action.

My lasting feeling of disappointment with this listening experience was the narrating, or at least just one aspect of the narrating that would otherwise have been good. This aspect was so grating and horrible that it destroyed every moment created and broke every spell created ....It was the very very very feeble and breathy voice of every female, this above all else dropped this experience to the lowest listen of all so far.
