Born under different stars—Mungo a Protestant and James a Catholic—they should be sworn enemies if they’re to be seen as men at all. Their environment is a hyper-masculine and sectarian one, for gangs of young men and the violence they might dole out dominate the Glaswegian estate where they live. Story
Fadeout is the first of Joseph Hansen’s twelve classic mysteries featuring rugged Dave Brandstetter, an insurance investigator who is contentedly gay. When entertainer Fox Olson’s car plunges off a bridge in a storm, a death claim is filed, but where is Olson’s body? As Brandstetter questions family, fans, and detractors, he grows certain Olson is still alive and must find him before the would-be killer does. Suspenseful and wry, shrewd and deeply felt, Fadeout remains as fresh today as when it startled readers more than thirty years ago.

When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Story
The Kingdom of Sand features a nameless narrator who has survived the death of his friends to AIDS and the loss of his parents to old age and tragedy. Now he must witness the slow demise of a friend just a shade older than he is. Semi-anonymous sexual encounters, gallows humor, and classic films are his tools for staving off the dying of the light. In prose that’s in turn mordantly funny and hauntingly elegiac, Andrew Holleran takes the listener from a video porn shop off Route 301 to the memory of parties in Washington, DC.

With his trademark prose—wickedly funny, unsentimental, and perfectly tuned—Saunders continues to challenge and surprise: here is a collection of prismatic, deeply resonant stories that encompass joy and despair, oppression and revolution, bizarre fantasy and brutal reality.

Story
During intermission at the famed La Fenice opera house in Venice, Italy, a notoriously difficult and widely disliked German conductor is poisoned—and suspects abound. Guido Brunetti, a native Venetian, sets out to unravel the mystery behind the high-profile murder. To do so, he calls on his knowledge of Venice, its culture, and its dirty politics. Along the way, he finds the crime may have roots going back decades—and that revenge, corruption, and even Italian cuisine may play a role.

Publisher's summary
Private eye Donald Strachey is out to solve another mystery, this time in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. When he starts probing into the institution of gay marriage, he doesn't expect it to lead to murder. Along with a birds-eye view of Berkshire culture, this audiobook combines the literary styles of Dashiell Hammett with the wit of Dorothy Parker. A taut, suspenseful, ripped from the headlines thriller, this is the ninth in the Strachey series.

A Good Time-Killer
This was an interesting read for me. It took a while to get into the author's reading of the book. Some of the phrases seemed stilted and therefore difficult to understand. The voices were rarely acted and a lot of the characters seemed to run together when speaking. This title won't be on my list of favorites due to the narration. Having said that, though, it wasn't the first audiobook that I have listened to where the narrator put me to sleep. IMHO, author's should stick to doing what they do best and let actors bring their works to life whether on screen or in the spoken word. As for the plot, it was well thought out, but was resolved before we even had a chance to guess at it. One of the fun parts of a murder mystery is trying to figure it out. This book just laid everything out all at once without most of the vital clues necessary to put the pieces together yourself. It felt more like deus ex machina than murder mystery...

Authors, never narrate your own books.
I only rated this book 3 stars because the author narrated it. Most authors do not have the talent to transfer their written work into an enjoyable listening product. It was hard to discern who was "speaking" because the narrator's inflection never changed. I don't know how they pay the narrator, but it makes a difference to the listeners. Bad reviews because of bad narrations means fewer people will purchase your audible book.

Five Stars
I'm giving this 5 stars because I prefer authors reading their own work. No one can be as authentic or know the character's psychologies as well. Such is the case with this rendition. Stevenson's tough but ironically funny delivery delivers detective Strachey in pure form. The text is as compelling as a Hammett or Chandler. I only wish Hammett recorded his own material. This will be a classic.
