Publisher's summary

Sir Manuel Camargue, yesterday one of the most celebrated musicians of his time, today floats face down in the lake near his sprawling English country house. The consensus is accidental death -- but Inspector Wexford knows the stench of murder most foul when he smells it. Particularly in the company of two suspects - one, the victim's fiancee, who is too young to be true, the other his daughter who may be no kin and even less kind.

One of Rendell's best

Compelling puzzle that transports Wexford from Kingsmarkham to California and France in a herculean effort to solve the case of an imposter heiress. Rendell does her usual fabulous job of bringing the peculiarities of place to readers, while featuring true-to-life, yet often eccentric characters. Loved it.

This Rendell novel was boring and draggy to me. I did not like it.

The story was boring, the characters were not well developed especially. it seemed to me, as if the author was in a state of depression, and wrote her depression out on paper. N9ne of the characters had much personality, or intelligence. A blah story.
