"A Cracking Story." (Natasha Harding, The Sun)
I don't know about you, but why are there so so so many 5 star reviews. I LOVE books, but so few are 5 star.
I could not finish do tothe narration. Too distracting. The sound effects were ridiculous, either you narrate unabridged or produce an abridged performance.
"Up to you really - a good story RUINED"
Get rid of the intrusive distracting background NOISE
NO leave alone
CUT the Editor !!! and sack the production team.
Well - this might be a good story - and to be honest what I've heard of it the narration is acceptable too. BUT BUT BUT.......
Some IDIOT, and I am sorry but no other word is really useful enough here, has completely ruined this story by adding loud and very intrusive sound effects. So if you want to know what a stirring of a teacup sounds like roll up roll up.
At time it is almost farcically funny - indeed it sounded like some sort game when someone says "he walked to his office" and somebody else has to do clip clop sound effects or "his phone rang.." and, yes you guessed it, a second later there is a beep beep sound.
Sadly the fun bit wears off fast and it becomes so irritating it distracts from the plot and it distracts from the solemnity of parts of the story. This is very very different from dramatization where several voices my play over background sounds because this is one narrator and some idiot adding pointless noises over his shoulder - it is that amateurish.
After a time you go mad waiting to pick up the next one - wondering if the "she threw up into the toilet bowl..." will be accompanied by appropriate retching sounds - sadly it wasn't because by then it summed up my appreciation of this production.
Anyway as far as I could tell the story is acceptable but I didn't get very far.
The author may have been pleased to sell the audio production rights but he should buy them back quickly and release a version not made by children having a laugh.
I like this book. The narrator is really good and I think the book is a bit different to other detective stories in that you get the procedural side of the police work as well as the crime side. I use the audio app whilst walking and found that I was taking detours to make the journey longer so that I could listen some more, there are twists and turns in the plot which keeps you interested right to the end.
I liked all the books equally.
laughed and cried at different stages.
