Deadly Coast | [R. E. McDermott]

Deadly Coast

As Tom Dugan and Alex Kairouz, his partner and best friend, struggle to ransom their ship and crew from murderous Somali pirates, things take a turn for the worse. A US Navy contracted tanker with a full load of jet fuel is also hijacked, not by garden variety pirates, but by terrorists with links to Al Qaeda, changing the playing field completely. With a possible link between piracy and terrorism now in play, the US and British governments order the halt of all negotiations for captive ships, and enraged pirates ratchet up the mistreatment of the captive crews.

Publisher's Summary

In the wake of his best-selling thriller Deadly Straits, which drew comparisons to Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, and W.E.B. Griffin, newcomer R.E. McDermott is back with an action-packed sequel.

Dugan thought Somali pirates were bad news. Then it got worse.

When one of his crewmen is murdered in front of him on a live video feed, a frustrated Dugan takes matters into his own hands and starts his own rescue operation, only to stumble across something far more sinister - a rogue salvage operation for a long lost weapon of mass destruction. Isolated at sea on an old tanker previously destined for the ship breakers, Dugan and his hastily assembled little force of Russian mercenaries find themselves the last line of defense between the world and a terrifying bio-weapon.

Weaving historical fact with speculative fiction, Deadly Coast takes the listener from London board rooms into the very real world of modern day pirates - and their victims.

    "Could Not Stop Listening"
Would you listen to Deadly Coast again? Why?

Yes. It was a consistently flowing storyline that kept me involved in the book to the point of not wanting to stop listening and to discover the next twist of the plot.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Deadly Coast?

The ending of Deadly Coast, when the pirates were given the two tankers was most memorable to me. It was a perfect ending to the entire storyline.

What about Todd Haberkorn’s performance did you like?

I liked his ability to keep the storyline moving.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES! I could not stop listening to it or even go to sleep until I finished it.

    Any additional comments?

Now having read both books, I am convinced that RE McDermott is capable of producing a far better book than Tom Clancy. His books are fast paced and have great plots and storylines. I can barely wait until the next book. I am hooked.

    "Fabulous Thriller"

McDermott's second thriller is every bit as engaging as Deadly Straits. Once again the reader becomes immersed in a deadly standoff with Somali pirates who have more on their agenda than just seizing a passing ship. By linking deadly events from the not too distant past to modern day piracy, McDermott has written a stellar thriller and Todd Haberkorn continues to deliver a praiseworthy narration. The pirates are depicted as particularly nasty and if the nastiness of the pirates was eye-opening, the author's notes at the end left me with my jaw hanging. Oh my . . . if you enjoy history, terror, and a great story about modern day piracy you won't be disappointed.

    "An Excellent Maritime Thriller!"
If you could sum up Deadly Coast in three words, what would they be?

Gripping, Thrilling and Intriguing are three words I would use to describe my listening experience of Deadly Coast.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

R.E. McDermott is outstanding at crafting a very good story that grabs your attention and has you hanging on as he develops his characters. McDermott feeds you with a diet of twists, turns and action, that draws you in until you are struggling to do anything else but listen to the story. I have read this book and the audiobook only enhanced the story. the plot keeps delivering all the way through the book. A clever author at work.

What about Todd Haberkorn’s performance did you like?

The performance of Deadly Straits by Todd Haberkorn was outstanding and his performance of Deadly Coast is fantastic! So much so that I researched this Narrator and R.E. McDermott has pulled off a coup in attaining his considerable skill to narrate Deadly Coast. Todd Haberkorn is a captivating narrator that engages the listener with his voice and ability to give life to the characters that has you creating a compelling story in your head. A real gift.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was drawn in more and more until I was virtually unable to turn it off. Very engaged!

    Any additional comments?

I can only wonder when both author and narrator will be able to get together on the next project because this listener will be waiting to get on board to enjoy another gripping yarn. Well done Robert and Well Done Todd!

    "McDermott Does It Again"

I wasn't sure Deadly Coast could live up to its big brother Deadly Straits but I was happy to find it did. The beginning was a bit slower to start than the first book but once it did, it kept rolling right along. Deadly Coast was rather terrifying since I couldn't help but think about the real pirates out there on our seas. Stay tuned at the end for some excellent history lessons and information on pirates.

This book had a bit of an X-Files feel to it for me, due to the underlying possible terrorist plot involved. Nothing paranormal, more along the lines of conspiracy. I recently listened to an audio book about Area 51 so the truths in this book were all too scary. I loved it! I was so sad when it was over and I had no more Dugan to read.

If you liked Deadly Straits, you simply can't miss this one. We've gotta get the word out about R. E. McDermott!

Would you listen to Deadly Coast again? Why?

I would listen to it again in a year or two. The book starts off slow and jumps around pretty quick with little pause in between.

Did Todd Haberkorn do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Todd did a good job differentiating all of the characters.
