Sometimes it seems like murder and mayhem follow Jeff Resnick, challenging his psychic "sixth sense" to solve crimes. Since the vicious mugging that changed his life, he's tried to keep his unwanted gift in check. But when a bartender at his favorite watering hole is murdered, visions of a woman's sparkling red high-heeled shoe and a pair of bloody hands linger in his mind - and hit too close to home. When Jeff's older brother, Richard, last helped him with an investigation, it nearly cost him his life. Still, Richard is determined to tag along as Jeff is drawn into the seamy world of fetishes and drag queens to find a murderer before another life is taken.

My turn; are you ready Audible world?
The psychic part of this series is interesting; the characters; not so much. Jeff is everyman except for this one little thing; he intuits murder scenes and deep emotions inside a human being's inner core. His stubborn insistence to stay on a case until it's solved doesn't seem at all consistent with a man at loose ends and unable to find his way.
His half-brother Rich is indeed rich; he also feels a lot of guilt because he was fortunate enough to have gifts and opportunities that weren't available to Jeff. Then there is Brenda; Rich's girlfriend who is the embodiment of all that is good. Such a paragon is not an easy character to relate to.
Jeff's girlfriend Maggie Brennan is the other side of the coin. She always seems to breaking up with Jeff over some minor disagreement. She also generally reacts to him with judgement, irritation, disapproval and anger. The reason that he continues to not only put up with her actions, but continues to pursue her is not stated in the text.
It certainly isn't apparent to this listener. In this story Jeff gets a job as a part time bartender while pursuing the killer of the previous bartender. A key to finding the killer is intertwined with the reappearance of a high school girlfriend of Rich's. Jeff's suspicions that the woman and her nephew are at the center of the murder collides head-on with Rich's similarly strong belief that she can't be. A three star listen at best even with hook of the psychic death detector.
