Publisher's summary

New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Charlaine Harris has won an Anthony Award for her one-of-a-kind Sookie Stackhouse mystery series. Sookie, a Louisiana cocktail waitress, skilled telepath, and friend to vampires, has a dedicated fan base that grows larger every day.

Because her mind-reading ability tends to spook people, most of Sookie's friends are of the not-exactly-human variety. And now that her brother is about to transform into a were-panther for the first time, the supernatural world is suddenly a family affair. When Sookie realizes a deadly sniper is gunning down the local changelings, her feelings turn to full-blown terror. She needs to stop the assassain before the next full moon...if he doesn't get to her first.

With its delightfully quirky characters and delicious suspense, Dead as a Doornail is a vampire mystery readers will love sinking their fangs into.

Critic reviews

"Harris does an admirable job of creating a heroine who's not only interesting but completely believable in a world of the strange and the different. Natural and humorous dialogue and a nicely paced plot...make this entry the best yet in the series." (Publishers Weekly)

Panthers, werewolves and vampires, oh my!

In the fifth story of Sookie Stackhouse, our small-town waitress and champion of other-world beings, Sookie begins to notice changes in her brother Jason as full moon approaches; Jason was bit by a were-panther in the last book.

When a sniper begins shooting at the "two-natured", Sookie's name for the folks that turn at full moon, her mild concern for Jason becomes outright fear. Sookie needs to find out who is shooting at the weres and stop them before her brother ends up in the sniper's sight, or herself!

These are entertaining stories and Parker's narration is perfect, bringing Sookie to life in your mind as you listen.

Insane!

Jason is about to turn into a panther for the first time. Calvin has agreed to help him with the transition. Everything turns out fine until Calvin gets shot in the chest. It turns out that a few weres and shifters have been shot. One was even killed. There are many people that seem to think that Jason may be the one shooting them. They think he's trying to get revenge for being turned into a panther against his will. This book was all over the place! I was impressed and intimidated. I also do not remember reading this the first time around at all. I'm beginning to think it's because I read the series so long ago and I've read so many books since then. Either way, I'm really enjoying reading the series. It's been an absolutely amazing ride for me. There were a few parts in this particular book that I felt were a little too rushed over. Sookie seems to have really come into her skin in this one. She's fully standing up for herself. She's completely sarcastic. I do feel like there's a bit of pent up aggression and agitation that she should probably find a healthy way to get out. Eric and Sam will always be two of my favorite characters in this series. For two completely different reasons. I never really cared for Bill. I always thought his attitude was rude and selfish. This book, like the rest of the series, was narrated by Johanna Parker. She did just as amazing job on this book as she did the rest. If I close my eyes as I listen, it will be like I'm actually there observing through Sookie's eyes. I know that I could get that while reading too. I get that. It's just that she completely throws herself into the story. It's almost like she literally becomes part of the story. It's amazing. It's inspiring! I don't really remember the series from the first time around. That's okay though. I'm really enjoying it this time around. It's been an amazing ride. I can't believe I'm practically halfway through the series now. I'm not quite halfway, but I'm almost there. I am at a point where I'm excited to power through the series, but I also don't want the series to end!

audio is off in this one, but the story moves fowa

I found the audio on this book to be strangely poor. After reading some of the other reviews, it appears that this book was the first done on audio, so that would explain why it seemed the previously flawless Ms. Parker had trouble remembering her accents, while sounding a tad bored with the whole thing.
While not my fave of the series, this book moves the storyline along nicely. I wish Alcede wasn't turning out to be such a tool, but I do very much like the introduction of Quinn (which is the main reason behind the 4th star) This book feels like a "bridge" book, used mainly to get from the previous book to the next one. If you like the characters and the story line, then it is absolutely worth it, but there are no major developments.

Good book, plot a little contrive.

This was the only one in the series that made me feel like “alright, another plot twist? We get it. Everyone’s out to get her, let’s move on.” But it is a good listen.
