Publisher's summary

When the village of Shrewsbury's own sheriff, Gilbert Prestcote, is taken prisoner by the Empress Maud's forces, its citizens are prepared to exchange him for a man of equal value they have within their possession. But soon after Prestcote arrives for the prisoner exchange, he dies. Was it death by natural causes or a most unnatural murder?

Hooray for Brother Cadfael

Like many others, I was introduced to Brother Cadfael through Masterpiece Mystery, and though it is hard to get the image of Derek Jacobi out of my mind when I am listening to these stories, Patrick Tull does an exceptional job narrating the story. For me, these stories are a nice blend of history and mystery. Who could ask for more?

Excellent cultural slice of border life

How does Hugh become Sheriff? Well here you go great stuff. Well worth more than one listen. I do not want to give it away, but Sister Magdalen is back proving that redemption can precede contrition.! As always a moral but still EXCITING story. Peters handles morality without being stuffy. If you are sick of smut but still want to be engaged give Cafael a try.

Tull and Cadfael are a perfect match

Another delightful Cadfael adventure, brilliantly rendered by Patrick Tull. Ellis Peters crafts her characters and stories beautifully. While she is clearly extremely knowledgeable about the period, she never shows off her knowledge, but brings in just as much as is needed for the story.

Cadfael is always a steady course

I know I can never go wrong when listening, or reading a Cadfael story. There is always something as you round the corners. And best of all, you never see it coming. Its human mystery at its best!

Never disappoints!!

The tales of Brother Cadfael never disappoint! I always find myself drawn into the story. So glad audible is making the unabridged recordings available! The narration by Patrick Tull was wonderful!

Great Narrator and Love Cadfael

I absolutely adore the characters chief among them Cadfael himself. Although, for most of the books, things work out for the characters in the end a bit like the plot of Three’s Company always worked out; I nonetheless, thoroughly enjoyed this book in the series.

narrator ruined story

My commute is 2.5 hours daily so I love audio books. love brother cadfael too, but the reader COMPLETELY ruined this book. the "acting" of the story was so distracting I had to shut it off before I ran off the road with irritation. find the title but with a different narrator if you want to hear the story instead of the bad acting.
