Publisher's summary

Ex-CIA master assassin Court Gentry has always prided himself on his ability to disappear at will, to fly below the radar and exist in the shadows - to survive as the near-mythical Gray Man. But when he takes revenge upon a former employer who betrayed him, he exposes himself to something he’s never had to face before.

A killer who is just like him.

Code-named Dead Eye, Russell Whitlock is a graduate of the same ultra-secret Autonomous Asset Program that trained and once controlled Gentry. But now, Whitlock is a free agent who has been directed to terminate his fellow student of death. He knows how his target thinks, how he moves, and how he kills. And he knows the best way to do the job is to make Gentry run for his life - right up until the moment Dead Eye finally ends it.

Guns and deception = suspense and butt-kicking

Ahh... some butt-kicking mind candy.

No deep morals here, no lectures, just lots of guns and deception.

It is probably the best of the Grey Man series... the author has matured, and his characters' actions have become more realistic.

It is not truly a vigilante justice story because the good guys are not really good guys, and the bad guys are not really bad guys, and there isn't really anyone you'll want 'punished' for their bad behaviour. But it does have lots of action, a bit of suspense, decent characters, and a solid wrap up.

You won't need to have read the others in the series to read this one. The author doesn't really repeat parts from the other books either, so if you did read them, you won't see much of them repeated here - it is a new story. And while it is not Lee Child's Jack Reacher, it is a decent fill in.

The narration is very good, there is some swearing, some non graphic, mostly gun-related violence, and no sex.

Fantastic series so far!

Outstanding book. Liked it ever more than the first in the series, and I loved that one in particular. Recommend to read entire set as there are some references to the previous plots. Very comparable to the Bourne series, but I enjoyed these more. I only had a few eye rolling moments when you had to suspend reality because the laws of probability or physics where seriously tested again. Nonetheless, lots of fun...

Great end to the series...or is it the end?

Would you listen to Dead Eye again? Why?

Most definitely. I love the series and have read all of the previous titles. With the exception of book 2 (that was a little lack luster), this was by far my favorite. It was refreshing to see Cort Gentry go against someone of a similar nature ( a fellow assassin). The story kept me intrigued until the end and the battles that ensued between Cort & Russ were awe-inspiring! As always it was action packed & you find yourself rooting for The Gray Man yet again.

What other book might you compare Dead Eye to and why?

Mark Greaney co-writes with Tom Clancy, so I'd have to say it does have a Tom Clancy-ish feel to it (Jack Ryan). I would also say that this series holds it's on as well.

Have you listened to any of Jay Snyder’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've said it before & I'll say it again. If they give out Oscar's for audio narration he would get one hands down. Phenomenal narration throughout the book. There was never a second guess about what character was what, even the female characters. His ability to distinguish each & every character whether Russian, Iranian, English or American Snyder delivers. I don't know how many languages Jay Snyder speaks, but his dialect was perfect with every different person. Jay Snyder is one if not the best narrator I've had the pleasure to experience in an audiobook. Period.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Neither. It mad me very anxious. Anxious to hear the next chapter, see who dies & how. This book definitely plays with your emotions, at least it did for me. The narrator is so good at painting a picture of Cort Gentry, you feel as if he is a real person, someone that you would actually know...and maybe even like. Well, I mean if you were into tall, dark & handsome former CIA operatives who happen to be assassins in their spare time. The storyline forces you to be Cort's ally. You want to get out there with your AK-47 or 9MM and kill some people too...all in the name of justifiable revenge of coarse.

Any additional comments?

I LOVED it! I hope...really hope...that The Gray Man has not retired. If so, it was a proper end to the series.

I am a Court Gentry Addict. I need # 5!

Where does Dead Eye rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The Gray Man books are fantastic audiobooks. Mr Snyder infuses every voice with its own accent, tenor and speed. Each time a character speaks I instantly knew who was speaking. And since the plots of the gray man books are always a rollicking, high speed chase from beginning to end. The book takes us through many countries and deals with many, many characters who may be friendly but are often not. I enjoy many types of fiction and find ranking books to be nearly impossible. BUT, here we are talking about how the book is narrated -- and this is one of the best.

BOX & SNYDER are a perfect matchup.

Cort Gentry continues

Good book with great narration. I like these characters regardless of the neverending and so highly improbable survivability of the Gray Man. Also, I've read the entire series this far and I'm still unsure of how he got the title "Gray Man.". Actually I'm not even sure what a Gray Man is what the connotation may mean. Nonetheless, these stories keep me from getting out of the car while I cross the bridge.

Needs more action

Would you listen to Dead Eye again? Why?

No. It's not as good (IMHO) as the previous books. While I liked the premise, it was long on talk and planning and short on action (something I never thought I'd say about one of Mark's books.)

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

No, in fact it got a little unbelievable and tiresome in spots.

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked when he was driving down the road in the van. Court really is the man!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, and usually I'm on the edge of my seat with the Grayman.

Best of the Series So Far

I thought this book added some elements that made the Gray Man's ultimate success seem less certain. The suspense level kicked into a higher degree.

Another great book from Mark Greaney.

Great book from start to finish. The narrator, Jay Synder, is amazing. I close my eyes and see everything like a movie. His narration is that good. I love the Grey Man series and look forward to next one.
