Publisher's summary

The master of the new noir, Dennis Lehane magnificently evokes the dignity and savagery of working-class Boston in this terrifying tale of darkness and redemption.

Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro's latest client is a prominent Boston psychiatrist running scared from a vengeful Irish mob. The private investigators know something about cold-blooded retribution. Born and bred on the mean streets of blue-collar Dorchester, they've seen the darkness that lives in the hearts of the unfortunate. But an evil for which even they are unprepared is about to strike as secrets long-dormant erupt, setting off a chain of violent murders that will stain everything - including the truth.

400 or more people gave this book 4 or 5 stars

The first book centered around raping a boy. Guess what the second book is centered around...if you guessed the rape of boys then you guessed correctly.

But hey this is a best selling series so I guess a lot of people like books about rape.

Oh and the one time they talk about a black person they refer to him by the N word.

Really good, but super graphic

I have to say that I am addicted! I read the first book in this series and had the same thought, this is so graphic and violent, but I cannot stop reading! The story did not disappoint, not for one second! Impressive for sure.
The use of racial slurs, was once again disappointing and unnecessary when used in this storyline and context. I couldn’t help my excitement going down a notch with each word. That is the only negative about it. I can’t wait to get started on the third book!

Detail of human characteristics

The degree of detail is amazing. You physically feel the scene.
Spellbinding from chapter to chapter. Fantastic

Best of the series

I’ve read all the Kenzie/Gennero books and I wish this one had been adapted to screen, this is hands down my favorite of the series. The narrator fits the story too, which really brings the story to life on audible.

Dennis Lehane series

I love his writing style. You become so immersed in the story and characters. My reason for a 3 star ⭐️ story rating is because I almost stopped reading the book 📚 several times due to the over the top descriptive torture and violence. When people read/listen to books 📚 they wish to immerse themselves into the story….not be so horrified by them. You certainly can write a excellent story that doesn’t become such a nightmare that you can’t wait to escape from.

heading optional

a couple of eye-rolling mistakes made by main characters, make this novel not as tight as other ones by DL. I'm not a big fan of serial killer stories, which have been done to death, part of the expression, so that also impacts my experience of the novel. but it is nonetheless excellent story, and the narration is stupendous. one of the best narrators I've heard.

Get. This One... 👌👌

Holey Moley... Whatta Story. Can Lehane tell a tale or what... I could not stop listening. truly frightening fun. there are so many twists and turns I cannot count, all of which only add to the excitement and understanding of this masterful writing, oh, and may I add superlative narration. Suspense in spades., great police procedures, gruesome characters, humor, pathos, Romance, great Boston geography ( live there from the late 80s to mid-90s) and a satisfying surprise finale. Patrick and Angela Rock... 🌟🌟🌟

Brilliant

Dennis Lehane is simply the best. His writing is suspenseful and smart. He fuels your imagination, ignites your curiosity and keeps you wanting more. The narrator does a great job giving Lehane’s words life without distracting from the story. I have, and will continue to, re-read/listen to the Kenzie/Gennaro series over and over-just can’t get enough!

Hard to follow

Never once grabbed my attention. Disappointing. Waiting for some sort of action and never got it.
