Publisher's summary

Virgil Flowers kicked around for a while before joining the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. First it was the army and the military police, then the police in St. Paul, and finally Lucas Davenport brought him into the BCA, promising him, "We'll only give you the hard stuff."

He's been doing the hard stuff for three years now, but never anything like this.

In the small town of Bluestem, a house way up on a ridge explodes into flames, its owner, a man named Judd, trapped inside. There are a lot of reasons to hate him, Flowers discovers. In fact, he concludes, you'd probably have to dig around to find a person who doesn't despise Judd.

And that isn't even why Flowers came to Bluestem. Three weeks before, there'd been another murder, two, in fact, a doctor and his wife, the doctor found propped up in his backyard, both eyes shot out. Flowers knows two things: this wasn't a coincidence, and it had to be personal.

But just how personal is something even he doesn't realize, and may not find out until too late. Because the next victim may be himself.

Critic reviews

“A book that will keep you turning pages, guessing, and completely immersed - and engrossed - in whatever Sandford wants to throw at you. It’s a great ride, and Sandford proves that sometimes it’s not the character, it’s not the series, it’s the writer.” (The Post)

“An adrenaline rush peppered with laugh-out-loud moments." (Booklist)

Flowers fuels another richly fragrant stem-winder.

Virgil Flowers is the guy who charms the ladies, does the man"s man thing in an ever so natural way, and a guy even his enemies have to enjoy just a bit. While Sanford's plot is once again complex and mostly unpredictable, it is the multiple characters and their motivations that make his stories so rich and engaging. And, it is his surfer -looking detective whose only water sport is muskie fishing that provides space for a cop with compassion.

Virgil Flowers is Cool!

Enjoy all John Sanford books but especially the ones featuring Virgil. He is a Renaissance man for sure.

Almost a superhero

My guess is the main character was written in the image of what the author would like to be. The guy can do anything AND get all the girls. But I still liked him.
Only complaints were inconsistencies and storylines not explained. Why did one of the murdered couples have daughters before the killings but become childless after. Why were victims placed facing east.
Narrator was too monotone. I like variations on the characters. Overall a good listen.

Really hard to get into

I had to force myself to finish listening. Giving it all 3 stars was pushing it. Sorry.

Another good one....

You can’t go wrong with this author. Lots of twists & a little humor. Believable cop talk.
His story telling is excellent & keeps you trying to figure out the killer.
I really enjoyed the narrator too. Very good voice. Being born & raised in MN, I noticed he mispronounced the town of Willmar. It’s Will- Mer not Will- mar. Also Kandiyohi County was wrong.
Little things, but if his books are centered in MN,

Narrator was weak

Narrator was weak - and I’m being nice. Storyline was good - typical John Sandford style. Hopefully the narrator gets better or I don’t know if I’ll be able to continue the series.
