Publisher's summary

Virgil Flowers kicked around for a while before joining the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. First it was the army and the military police, then the police in St. Paul, and finally Lucas Davenport brought him into the BCA, promising him, "We'll only give you the hard stuff."

He's been doing the hard stuff for three years now, but never anything like this.

In the small town of Bluestem, a house way up on a ridge explodes into flames, its owner, a man named Judd, trapped inside. There are a lot of reasons to hate him, Flowers discovers. In fact, he concludes, you'd probably have to dig around to find a person who doesn't despise Judd.

And that isn't even why Flowers came to Bluestem. Three weeks before, there'd been another murder, two, in fact, a doctor and his wife, the doctor found propped up in his backyard, both eyes shot out. Flowers knows two things: this wasn't a coincidence, and it had to be personal.

But just how personal is something even he doesn't realize, and may not find out until too late. Because the next victim may be himself.

Critic reviews

“A book that will keep you turning pages, guessing, and completely immersed - and engrossed - in whatever Sandford wants to throw at you. It’s a great ride, and Sandford proves that sometimes it’s not the character, it’s not the series, it’s the writer.” (The Post)

“An adrenaline rush peppered with laugh-out-loud moments." (Booklist)

Monotone narrator

Good story, but hard to keep engaged with that monotone narrator. It was hard to tell which character was talking because they were all the same.

Monotone reader ruined the story.

This story is a good one but the reader didn’t change cadence or inflection in his voice once so it was hard to follow. I couldn’t tell if it was a whopping speaking or a man speaking for than near raider speaking or anything. That is the worst kind of book to listen to. Where there is just no difference between any of the voices of the story. I never listen to this we go again. But of course the story was great and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series as long as there’s a new reader.

Really struggled to get through this one

Ok story that could have been made at least a little more realistic. Many of the relationships, plot pivots, scenes were just not very credible. Way too long. I fell asleep multiple times while struggling to get to the end of this book.

good story,weak performance.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Eric Conger?

Richard Ferrone, Eric Conger's reading was kind of dry and lacked any real personality. He also speaks too softly.

First Virgil Flowers

I've been a fan of John Sandford for awhile. I always enjoy his writing style. This is my first Flowers novel, I really enjoyed it. The plot, the characters are all fleshed out in an entraining way.

It was okay

My first Sandford story and I mean, it was okay. I was expecting a little more, but the story was okay. The main character (Virgil Flowers) doesn't have demons in his past which is actually a good thing in my opinion, because too many authors are giving their main character (cops) past demons and it can be repetitive. But other than that, it wasn't a story that made me want to continue on with the series. However, maybe in the future I will give another chance.

Good read!

Might be a little too complicated and a little confusing, the narrator is very good.
