Dancers in Mourning | [Margery Allingham]

Dancers in Mourning

Everyone fell under the spell of Jimmy Sutane, the charming and talented song-and-dance man. Everyone, that is, except the spiteful practical joker who put a pin in his stick of grease-paint and pasted 'Last Week' over the 'House Full' notices. Nothing too deadly. But as soon as Albert Campion is called in to investigate, people begin to die, and there's no shortage of suspects when the first victim's death is so convenient for so many.

Publisher's Summary

Everyone fell under the spell of Jimmy Sutane, the charming and talented song-and-dance man.

Everyone, that is, except the spiteful practical joker who put a pin in his stick of grease-paint and pasted 'Last Week' over the 'House Full' notices. Nothing too deadly. But as soon as Albert Campion is called in to investigate, people begin to die, and there's no shortage of suspects when the first victim's death is so convenient for so many.

As the death toll rises and the tension mounts, Margery Allingham's imperturbable detective loses his heart - and his customary detachment - when he falls violently in love with Jimmy Sutane's wife…

    "Wonderful book, sadly abridged recording"
    Any additional comments?

This is one of her best books. It is a pity the recording was abridged, so that some of the best parts were omitted!

    "Smart Classic British Mystery"

I almost didn't buy Dancers in Mourning because it's abridged, and I never buy abridged. However, the allure of this classic British mystery writer was irresistible and I'm glad I succumbed. It doesn't have the choppy, thin "feel" of an abridged book. It's nice a long with lots of juicy character detail and dialogue. You can sit back, press the "on" button, and feel yourself getting pulled right into that golden zone, the zone of the classic British mystery--set between the wars, full of eccentric, striking characters and intricate plotting. This story has not one but three egotistic theatrical stars; a manor house, and an adorable but unobtainable (because married) love interest for our hero detective, Mr. Campion. If you like Christie, Marsh, or Sayers you'll like Allingham's Dancers in Mourning.

This is a fabulous book. The story is engaging with an unexpected twist at the end. The characters are pitch perfect. Allingham writes with great insight and empathy. The narrator is very good. I love this book!

"Philips Franks' readings do Allingham justice."
Where does Dancers in Mourning rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Very high

Who was your favorite character and why?

Albert Campion is always the outstanding character, Lugg an amusing follow-up.

What does Philip Franks bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His vocal variety is extraordinary, and he really gets Campion and Lugg across with their unique personalities.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This is a light murder mystery, so really it's just fun.

    Any additional comments?

I hope Mr. Franks does many more of Margery Allingham's books. I have already purchased all of the ones he has done so far. Allingham is one of the great, imaginative writers of all time.

Wonderful book, great performance from a classic series. The only criticism is that like the rest of the series, this audio is abridged.
