Publisher's summary

Daniel Suarez's New York Times best-selling debut high-tech thriller is “so frightening even the government has taken note” (Entertainment Weekly).

Daemons: computer programs that silently run in the background, waiting for a specific event or time to execute. They power almost every service. They make our networked world possible. But they also make it vulnerable....

When the obituary of legendary computer game architect Matthew Sobol appears online, a previously dormant daemon activates, initiating a chain of events that begins to unravel our interconnected world. This daemon reads news headlines, recruits human followers, and orders assassinations. With Sobol’s secrets buried with him, and as new layers of his daemon are unleashed, it’s up to Detective Peter Sebeck to stop a self-replicating virtual killer before it achieves its ultimate purpose - one that goes far beyond anything Sebeck could have imagined....

Critic reviews

“A riveting debut.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“This thrill-a-nanosecond novel is certainly faithful to the techno-traditions of Michael Crichton and should delight not only readers of the 'science gone awry' genre, but general adventure readers as well.” (Booklist)

“Suarez's not-just-for-gamers debut is a stunner.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Great Techno Thriller

Truly enjoyed the futuristic view of the society. Totally plausible and believable in 2015. Returned for second "listen" of the 3-book series. Hope Daniel Suarez is busy working on the next trilogy.

Awesome story... completely unnecessary foul language

I absolutely loved the story! My husband and I met on an MMORPG so I found this book extra fascinating. I would give the story itself 10 stars if I could!

HOWEVER… There was so much foul language that was completely unnecessary! I felt unable to have the book on when my children were home. But, if that is not something that bothers you, then you will probably love this book!

An escalation of technologies critical mass.

This was not only my first Daniel Suarez book but my first Jeff Gurner narrated experience. Let me first say that I am incredibly satisfied as a listener/reader, Jeff brings so many characters to vivid life in book 1 of this two-part death and rebirth of society.

I was drawn in deeply starting from a world I thought I knew, our world, to the possibilities of what reasonable steps in a succession of events and personal choices of the characters and themed orchestrating AI could bring us to. In short, this book is perfect, and the narration of it is equally masterful to a degree where I don't think I could imagine this book without Jeff Gurner's cast of voices.

What a trip!

Not a techie, so initially thought this book was not my cup.
But stuck to it and ...wow
Excellent writing can find appeal to a broad range of readers and this book does that. It presents a creative , compelling and a little too possible future, especially in light of our present. Bravo!

It is more possible than not. Science Faction.

I didn't know what I was getting myself into. This book is well done in a semi fantastic way. Narrated and written well with a steady pace of highs and lows. It's been years since I heard it here on Audible but I still get flashbacks to this book more than others when things are playing out - UT here in the real world. After all we have been through and so much disaster is imminent, it's great to hear about Tech's abilities in the modern age. It may be 2030 before we see it, but THEY LIVE and THE MATRIX push similar concepts. Again... This is a much more imaginable near-future than an an '88 or '98 story. Kinda scary!!!

Good book but

Wasn’t a fan of the ending. Other than that it has great production on the audio side.

Very suspenseful

Like the narrator, like the storyline, and I’m excited to read the second book. I was very surprised by the ending with all the characters dying off, except for the guy that was put to death.
