Publisher's summary

Daniel Suarez's New York Times best-selling debut high-tech thriller is “so frightening even the government has taken note” (Entertainment Weekly).

Daemons: computer programs that silently run in the background, waiting for a specific event or time to execute. They power almost every service. They make our networked world possible. But they also make it vulnerable....

When the obituary of legendary computer game architect Matthew Sobol appears online, a previously dormant daemon activates, initiating a chain of events that begins to unravel our interconnected world. This daemon reads news headlines, recruits human followers, and orders assassinations. With Sobol’s secrets buried with him, and as new layers of his daemon are unleashed, it’s up to Detective Peter Sebeck to stop a self-replicating virtual killer before it achieves its ultimate purpose - one that goes far beyond anything Sebeck could have imagined....

Critic reviews

“A riveting debut.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“This thrill-a-nanosecond novel is certainly faithful to the techno-traditions of Michael Crichton and should delight not only readers of the 'science gone awry' genre, but general adventure readers as well.” (Booklist)

“Suarez's not-just-for-gamers debut is a stunner.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Plan for our future? I can hope...

Not perfect, but as close as I've come on Audible. Has new ideas used in logical ways. And people that act in ways I'd recognize as possibly human. I'm happy they include two readers (male and female) to expand the possibilities for character range.

Even high quality has annoying quality issues (hissing and cracking regularly through any source I play on). And they could have used those two voice sources a ton better (one reader per chapter generally, so you still get men reading women's roles and sounding like a transgender person... Fine if the character was, but... Jarring otherwise.)

Fictional techo

It's hard to really discuss this book without giving away too much. While it starts out somewhat plausible, it begins to fall into realm of high tech fiction fantasy. While it is food for thought, a message that we may be tied to closely to our machines, the end is a very extreme what if every thing that can go wrong, does. While the some of the scenarios and technology are possible, the combination's of it all are highly unlikely. I was hoping for something more in the realm of today's standards, a high tech crime drama/mystery.The story is engrossing and compelling, but tends to get lost at times following characters that randomly pop up and adds little to the story. There are some really good action scenes that I was not expecting. It drives me nuts hearing the narrator say daemon, like demon, and not day-mon. There is a lot of techo speak that some people may not understand. It would help to have background in programming, electronics, or networking. The narrator is pretty good, but does not have a lot of different voices to give to all the characters, but he does accents well. Once you can take the book for what it is, it can be a very enjoyable ride. By the end is seems the daemon has the world by the throat, the ending is a cliff hanger for sure, so you will probably want to get the next the book.

Love and Hate. Great & Inane

Yes, it was a somewhat torturous read. 2 or 3 times I almost quit when sections went on too long about inane subjects but I came back like an estranged husband does. Great premise. Very good performance, well written . Intriguing and intense.

Not bad...

Thought the book was very good for the most part. I found the author misused a couple of terms, but they were close enough for artistic license. What I found disappointing was the ending which I felt was very unresolved in many ways. I would recommend the book and think it was a novel concept, just wish the author had made different choices with the ending.

Best book I've read so far in 2010. Loved it!

Others have said but I have to fall in line and say this book is amazingly good. The references to Dan Brown and William Gibson others have made is correct. It's a hybrid near future SF and a page-turning Thriller. I highly recommend this audiobook. It starts kind of rough in my opinion but trust me the more you read the better it gets. The bones of this story are solid. Enjoy!

Great Story

This book kept me hooked the whole time and the devilish logic was fun to follow. The performance was also done very well, good use of subtle sound effects.

Absolutely worth your time.

great story but leaves you hanging

the ideas herre are pretty interestimg if somewhat dated (at least some of them). The character development is good for some characters and weak in others. The story is full of action and will keep you reading. Good story.
