Publisher's summary

Daniel Suarez's New York Times best-selling debut high-tech thriller is “so frightening even the government has taken note” (Entertainment Weekly).

Daemons: computer programs that silently run in the background, waiting for a specific event or time to execute. They power almost every service. They make our networked world possible. But they also make it vulnerable....

When the obituary of legendary computer game architect Matthew Sobol appears online, a previously dormant daemon activates, initiating a chain of events that begins to unravel our interconnected world. This daemon reads news headlines, recruits human followers, and orders assassinations. With Sobol’s secrets buried with him, and as new layers of his daemon are unleashed, it’s up to Detective Peter Sebeck to stop a self-replicating virtual killer before it achieves its ultimate purpose - one that goes far beyond anything Sebeck could have imagined....

Critic reviews

“A riveting debut.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“This thrill-a-nanosecond novel is certainly faithful to the techno-traditions of Michael Crichton and should delight not only readers of the 'science gone awry' genre, but general adventure readers as well.” (Booklist)

“Suarez's not-just-for-gamers debut is a stunner.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Cliff hanger, edge of your seat reading!

I am an IT Admin so I was excited to find a book related to the IT "underworld". I was expecting a story about a hacker writing programs that caused excessive spam and in general what we at the admin level experience everyday....Man, was I wrong. This book was amazing in the factual details of what really could happen if someone had enough money, motivation, and ability to actually plan and implement this kind of program. It is very graphic so be ready as it holds nothing back when it comes to the details. I did not find any points in this book that made me not want to continue...the ending was a shocker so I am ready for the sequel.

Gets loads better as it goes. gotta stick with it.

Gets loads better as it goes. gotta stick with it. The narrators are fantastic. I can't wait to read the sequel. It however, was a very disturbing book. I know it's fiction, but at times it seems all to plausible.

B-Fiction at it's best!

Yeah I agree that this is like a B-movie, but it's still an interesting story. The funny thing is, I tried to read the paperback, but found the writing so terrible that I just couldn't get into it, however, as an audiobook it was much better. The writing's bad, but the story's great. If you're into techy sci fi it's a must listen, just don't try to read it!

A Must! I can't stress that enough

Would you consider the audio edition of Daemon to be better than the print version?

sounds effects and voice acting really surrounds you in this story. well done

What did you like best about this story?

the fact that this could really happen with our current technology is so striking. really pulls you in

What does Jeff Gurner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He does such a great job. I've read the 2nd part of this series and Kill decision. He has done an outstanding job. Now I'm wondering what other books he has read just to get the same level of experience.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Daemon.. its only a matter of time...

GREAT BOOK BROUGHT TO AUDIO

What did you love best about Daemon?

The storyline is great- and should give everyone something to think about. This is not just a techie-geek story; its a look at the future of society.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Pete Sebek of course

What about Jeff Gurner’s performance did you like?

Didn't really think about it-- with regards to audio books, you don't really think about who's talking- just if you can tolerate their reading of your favorite book. Jeff was able to do this.

Any additional comments?

read the book, now have the audio to listen to while commuting.

Great tech fiction!

Matrix fans will love it!! Well read and great story, narrative was a tad clunky to start, but it evens out about 2 chapters in.

Enjoyable Read

Interesting twist on AI taking over the world. More believable than other AI style books. Really enjoyed the book. Good characters and good narration add to the already interesting story. Would definitely recommend.

Very Good

Well written and entertaining. The reviews that described the so called "rape scene" as brutal and graphic are just silly. Spoiler alert... A girl given ecstasy who then takes off her shirt and performs fellatio on several men while being filmed without her consent is not a "brutal rape scene". Sad and unfortunate maybe, but not brutal.
