Editorial reviews

Natalie Greco, a law professor, is teaching a class at a local prison when a riot breaks out. Trying to rescue a dying guard, she's witness to his last words: "Tell my wife it's under the floor." Suddenly she's suspected of murder, chased by cops and killers, not to mention a colleague with romance in mind. Barbara Rosenblat is a perfect match for Scottoline's dramatic story. Scottoline writes with breakneck speed, and Rosenblat reads breathlessly. Scottoline injects humor, and Rosenblat inserts wry tones to relieve the intensity. Scottoline's characters are fully dimensional; Rosenblat breathes life into them. The author's cast is large; Rosenblat invents a huge range of voices to enliven the exciting story.

Publisher's summary

Law professor Natalie Greco has an ordered life. She feels a passion for teaching, especially her arcane History of Justice seminar, even though the course is pathetically undersubscribed in the high-powered law school. She has an attentive boyfriend and a protective family, although her testosterone-fueled big brothers and very successful parents tend to overlook the quiet Nat.

Then, one terrible day, everything changes. Nat accompanies her colleague Angus to a prison in Chester County, where he's a guest lecturer. They are hardly inside before the speaker system announces a "disturbance" and the warden orders a lockdown. They're smack in the middle of a riot. In front of a horrified Nat, a prison guard is fatally injured. Nat rushes to help him, only to hear his last words: "Tell my wife. It's under the floor. The money."

At that moment, reinforcements arrive, the riot is quelled, and Nat and Angus are escorted out of the building by U.S. marshals. Remembering the dying guard's words, Nat feels she must find his widow. But this is no simple quest, and along the way, Nat is framed for murder and the retiring scholar finds herself in a desperate fight to save her own life.

Great, but super unrealistic...

What did you love best about Daddy's Girl?

I really like the main character Nat, although I really didn't understand the whole "Nat" with a "G".

If you’ve listened to books by Lisa Scottoline before, how does this one compare?

I have read a number of books by Lisa Scottoline, this was not my favorite.

Which character – as performed by Barbara Rosenblat – was your favorite?

I like Bennie the best.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did want to listen to the entire book quickly, but the ending where she went to the prison was too far and unrealistic.

Any additional comments?

I did like that Angus was arrested at the end.

Worthwhile...

I found "Daddy's Girl" to be filled with interesting twists and turns. It has a very unexpected ending. It kept me listening, even though I should have been doing other things...The main character shows a lot of inner growth throughout the story. I found her to be a very likeable character, and her brothers in the story are like brothers everywhere in some respects (loud, protective, sports fanatics, inconsiderate, yet caring). This book made me laugh, cry, cringe, and cheer in different places. I enjoyed it.

Love this!

I listen to a lot of audiobooks (mostly mystery and suspence stuff - and a little romance thrown in never hurts either) and 99% of them are pretty darn predictable. This book kept me guessing all the way to the very end. I had no idea who, what, or how. It was great!!! Im hoping this author delivers as well on her other books cause so far Im a big fan!

Took effort to give this one a chance

Would you try another book from Lisa Scottoline and/or Barbara Rosenblat?

Probably not since there are so many other authors to choose from.

What was most disappointing about Lisa Scottoline’s story?

I was not interested in the main character at all. In my opionion, the author did a poor job of making her a likeable character. I need to be able to like / connect with the main character(s) in books and movies. If that isn't the case, I quickly loose interest.

Would you be willing to try another one of Barbara Rosenblat’s performances?

No. However, I might accidentally since I likely will not remember her name. She did not leave a good impression as far as narrating ability. (Unlike Ralph Cosham, the narrator of Louise Penny's Three Pines series which I have recently been listening to. He does a great job.)

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I could not bear to listen beyond the first few chapters. I hoped it would get better but eventually gave up.

Save your time avoid this one!

This book wasn't very good and the person that read it was worse! I have listened to a lot of books and thankfully this is the first one I really disliked.

Prob the worst book so far

The story was decent enough but I could not stand the narrator. Her character portrayals were annoying to no end. In one case, there is a student in her law class from Southern California. The narrator makes him sound like a stony loser from So Cal. Very cliche. This was one of many examples. And Nat's brother...ANNOYING!

difficult to listen to

I love the distraction of audiobooks as I drive and can make my way through almost anything - and have enjoyed other books of Lisa's very much. This book however, proved my most difficult task. For the first couple of hours, nothing seems to happen. there appears to be no point to the story, no direction.. the setup is far, far too long. The main character is really tough to like- makes ridiculous decisions and allows herself to be pushed around by everyone.
The story is resolved with what I am sure is meant to be a clever ending but felt tacked on and incomplete.

A waste of time and money

The surfer-dude nasal twang of the narrator is extremely annoying; the tone and cadence are like listening to the sarcasm of Erma Bombeck for hours on end.
