Publisher's summary

To most people, Maj. John Rexford is a retired marine living in the Catskill Mountains of New York on disability. Even John's girlfriend, Maggie, has no idea he's really a CIA spook recruited in Afghanistan and assigned to kill enemies on US soil. With exemplary skills in hand-to-hand combat and small-arms weaponry, John Rexford completes a string of successful kills, eliminating terrorists and their money supply in the New York metropolitan area. With the FBI hot on his trail for these illegal assassinations, John must find a way to stop an international team of explosives experts from destroying New York City's aqueducts, killing thousands with chlorine gas, and burning the five boroughs to the ground. During his mission John runs afoul of a high-level underworld assassin who uses his mastery of yoga to silently strangle his victims. When the assassin discovers John's one liability - his girlfriend, Maggie - John will have to make a terrible choice between her life and the capture of her abductor. This tightly scripted story begins with a terrorist plot and gradually turns into a clash between two professional killers, with the lives of both John Rexford and Maggie hanging in the balance. As the characters collide with deadly force on the streets of New York in Cut and Cover, the line between right and wrong blurs, long-standing loyalties are questioned, and no one is really sure, even if they succeed, what the final outcome will be.

Critic reviews

“A resounding character study just as much as it is an action novel, and both are equally triumphant.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Barely enough story for a novella.

Basically a very boring story about cycling and over described meals. With maybe 30 pages of action. Plus the ending was terrible

good content

Good book. Gets better the longer you listen. Not a big fan of the reader.

It's the little details I liked

Mostly realistic, but lacked something. Liked the performer and the humorous aspects. Loved the voice of Yoda. Not bad writing and no real loose ends left hanging. Liked alot of detail pertaining to the inner training of the martial mentality. Lots of good that would lead me to another Kevin Hurley novel.

Liked the story

Story was pretty entertaining. Narrator needed more variation in his voice for the different characters.

Awesome suspenseful plot

Difficult-to-listen-to narration. What's a "balaclayva?"

Also, the author's description of the Hasidic Jew's garb and accent are plainly wrong. Syereotype or simple lack of knowledge?

When I made it through sections without having to skip back, I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Slow Start great finish

Once I get over the first couple chapters, I really enjoyed this book. It was a little bit confusing as to the players, but all in all it was a good story and a great performance

This was a pill

Very jerky and disjointed I had a tough time finishing. I just did not flow well and was disappointing.

Not impressed.

The story of a bicycle riding assasin seemed kinda cheesy. The characters fell flat and had little depth and didn't create any affinity towards them. I felt as if the author over characterized settings that did little to advance his plot but just add filler to a thin plot The narration was ok. I had no issues with the narration. I almost didn't finish listening except I was on a long drive and hadn't downloaded anything else. This definitely would not be my first choice.

Worth the time to listen. Entertaining story with several surprises. Likable characters and decent plot.
