Publisher's summary

The house guests at Styles seemed perfectly harmless to Captain Hastings: There was his own daughter Judith, an inoffensive ornithologist called Norton, dashing Mr. Allerton, brittle Miss Cole, Doctor Franklin and his fragile wife Barbara, Nurse Craven, Colonel Luttrell and his charming wife Daisy, and the charismatic Boyd-Carrington.

So Hastings was shocked when Poirot declared that one of them was a five-times murderer. True, the ageing detective was crippled with arthritis, but had his deductive instincts finally deserted him?

A Wonderful Finale.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Poirot of course.

What about Hugh Fraser’s performance did you like?

As always excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes it was, but I didn't!

Any additional comments?

Whilst many of the later books in this series were disappointing this was an excellent ending to an overall wonderful series. It was fantastic to have the pairing of Poirot and the gentle Hastings for the last mystery. If you have enjoyed Poirot you will not be disappointed.

My favorite of all Hercule mysteries

Very nostalgic, I was in tears. The relationship between Hercule and Hastings so warmhearted in this book. I loved, loved loved it. I will listen again sometime with less sadness and more appreciation of very good friends.

Wonderful Poirot!!

have always liked Agatha Christie, but especially have I loved her Belgian detective. This story takes us full circle with Poirot and Hastings, back to Styles the scene of their first adventure together. I won't go into more detail as I don't want to give any spoilers. This is a worthy addition to your Christie library, and I highly recommend this book. Good hunting!

Can it really be the end...?

As Poirot's body has begun to fail him, he has called on his friend, Hastings, to act as his eyes and ears throughout this unusual investigation. Poirot was not called in to investigate on this one; instead, after studying five previous murders, he has called Hastings in to help him prevent the mysterious "X" from killing yet again.
We are treated to a final cast of unusual characters as the story progresses. Hastings is constantly reminded by his Belgian friend that he makes poor use of his brain as he tries to identify the unknown "X"; only Poirot seems to have determined the identity of X and he is not willing to share this information even with Hastings. We are also introduced to one of Hastings' grown daughters in this tale.
As Poirot's final exercise in the use of his gray cells began to wind down, I felt a pang of regret that Poirot's life was coming to an end and felt for Hastings as his life must move on without his friend.

intriguing and bittersweet

a good mystery, nearly impossible to figure out, kept my interest.

SPOILER: as was mentioned, this is Poirot's last case and he dies in this book. I have to say that that part was quite emotional and sad for me. The mystery was good, so I was a bit torn in choosing a rating. It definitely had an emotional impact. The other AG mystery that was similarly emotional was "Endless Night". I would recommend both.

Perfect, as always!

As always, Agatha’s little gray cells were working perfectly. So sad to have Poirot die, though. But, as they say, it is a part of life. Masterfully written! But what really makes these books so wonderful to listen to is the performance of Hugh Fraser. He is so good, you forget that you aren’t listening to four or five different people playing these parts. We’ll done, Mr. Fraser!

What a poignant closure to Poirot's career

This book makes me quite nostalgic. I went back and reread The Mysterious Affair at Styles.
