Publisher's summary

Based on true events, this historic unveiling is not a dream, not a hoax, and not a parallel universe! Two of the most unique investigators of all time try to untangle the same mystery, 100 years apart from each other.

Set in the lawless Wild West, the hidden world of Victorian London, and the present-day hell of Hollywood, Cry of Thunder: Sherlock Holmes & Kolchak the Night Stalker follows Holmes' trail of a man who was wrongfully - and willingly - imprisoned; a shocking New World Order anarchy; a beautiful woman who needs Kolchak to delve into the surreal past; and the shunned man who holds the key.

Pure Vintage Kolchak

This was an interesting crossover, a case through the ages that involved Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and Carl Kolchak. Of course there is a supernatural element as well. While the story binds them together, it's the character pieces that make this book. The author has Kolchak down pat and you will smile and laugh at his wit. His interactions with the professor are fantastic as well. The Sherlock Holmes section was interesting as well. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audiobook. Johnny Heller is a perfect Kolchak, his voice beautifully captured the character and spirit of the book.

Kolchak Can’t Catch A Break

I listened to this immediately on the heels of the original Jeff Rice novels; it was ok.

I could almost hear Darren McGavin in my head as the story progressed. Johnny Heller did a decent job as Carl Kolchak.

But for me the story itself was lacking.

I felt like Sherlock Holmes should have played a bigger role in the story and the connection between Holmes and Kolchak was MEH.

I thought the ‘great mystery’ that crossed the decades was uninteresting and it didn’t draw me in.

I wanted to know more about the time between Kolchak’s stint in Las Vegas and his present in Hollywood but the author didn’t really touch on it except to say Kolchak’s wife died; I want to know more about that.

I felt like the pre-requisite ‘monster-of-the-week’ was uninteresting and thrown in because someone said, “There must be a monster.”

It killed several hours during for my ride to/from work but I wouldn’t give it a second listen.
