Publisher's Summary

In and out of hospitals since birth, angelic nine-month-old Morgan Reid finally succumbed to what appeared to be Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Morgan's Texas-born mother Tanya, a nurse and devoted wife, pulled up stakes with her grieving husband Jim, and moved on. It was the best way to put the past behind them. Until their son Michael, a boy who by all accounts was terrified of his mother, began showing signs of the same affliction that stole the life of his baby sister....

First, the suspicion: Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Then, Tanya was charged and convicted with felony child abuse of her son. She was later tried and ultimately convicted for first degree murder of Morgan. It would become a landmark trial that unfolded in a series of reversals and bizarre twists of fate as it gradually revealed another side of Tanya Reid - of her own troubling childhood and the dark secrets that drove a woman to the cruelest deception of all....

Gregg Olsen tells the whole shocking story of this true crime in Cruel Deception.

    "Too Many Detours"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The author kept quoting short comments all the way through that the characters had made which became very irritating. A general description of their opinion/attitude would have been better. Plus he kept jumping all over the place so not a smooth transition

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

No. The plot would have been interesting if written by a better author. The subject matter is an intriguing one but not documented well here at all.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Christy Lynn?

    Ye

    Any additional comments?

Chapter two wasn't edited so all the way through the whole chapter was the sound of the narrator clearing her throat, coughing, repeating clusters of words several times to get the correct intonation and making funny noises in her quest to get it right. How this slipped past the editor is beyond me. I nearly packed it part way through this chapter as it was very frustrating but hung on in the hope it was the only chapter like this. Luckily it was.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator obviously has a cold. The constant stopping to sniffle then repeat herself is annoying disgusting and insulting. m

What didn’t you like about Christy Lynn’s performance?

She needs to blow her nose sniffle and clear her throat in her own time. just awful

    Any additional comments?

Change narrators then repost the book its worthless as it is

"Good read for a long trip"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - it's interesting on both a mystery book/crime thriller way and also a "can't not look at the accident on the road" way.

What other book might you compare Cruel Deception to and why?

None I can think of off the top of my head, but put it in the category of good medical crime drama

If you could give Cruel Deception a new subtitle, what would it be?

    Mommie Dearest Part Deux

    "Fascinating true story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - it's an in depth look at a serious but highly misunderstood issue.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It did - wondering about all the evidence coming into play and the strength of the Prosecutor and Defense's cases. Total "edge of your seat" book - Gregg Olsen's writing is PHENOMENAL.

What about Christy Lynn’s performance did you like?

She's good - her voice definitely suits this genre.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A story that you can not afford to miss

    Any additional comments?

    Love Gregg Olsen's writing!

"The worst audio editing I've ever experienced."
What would have made Cruel Deception better?

Monitoring of the recording process and post-recording editing. Chapter 2 is a disgrace with pauses, repeated false starts, sniffles, throat clearings, etc.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not exactly, but it's not that kind of book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Christy Lynn’s performances?

Possibly, but it might be a long time.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I like true crime stories and this probably would have been considerably more enjoyable with a male narrator.

    Any additional comments?

Personally, I think that this title should be withdrawn; at least, until it can be brought up to snuff technically. I've never had a worse experience reading an audio book (and since I'm blind, I've been doing it all my life) than trying to get through Chapter 2. Didn't *anybody* validate the work before it was released?

"good story, narration not so much."

Not until the afterward did the narrative sound professional. Tonya, as voiced by Christy Lynn, sounded like someone portrayed by a 7th grader. Absolutely awful. It was tolerable when Ms Lynn wasn't reading actual dialogue, but when she did I tried to Ff through it so I didn't have to listen to the horrible fake southern accent and shrill voice.

    "Good story"

The book was written well, the author did a great deal of research and I learned a lot about MSBP. I was quite distracted by the narration though. The cadence was awkward and when reading a man's voice the narrator talked in a very unnatural tone and made young men sound very old. The narration of Tonya was over the top.
