Cruel Deception: St. Martin's True Crime Library

In and out of hospitals since birth, angelic nine-month-old Morgan Reid finally succumbed to what appeared to be Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Morgan's Texas-born mother Tanya, a nurse and devoted wife, pulled up stakes with her grieving husband Jim, and moved on. It was the best way to put the past behind them. Until their son Michael, a boy who by all accounts was terrified of his mother, began showing signs of the same affliction that stole the life of his baby sister.

First, the suspicion: Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Then, Tanya was charged and convicted with felony child abuse of her son. She was later tried and ultimately convicted for first degree murder of Morgan. It would become a landmark trial that unfolded in a series of reversals and bizarre twists of fate as it gradually revealed another side of Tanya Reid - of her own troubling childhood and the dark secrets that drove a woman to the cruelest deception of all....

    "Mediocrity sells"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, While my time was not wasted listening to this book there are far more noteworthy true crime books out there.

Would you recommend Cruel Deception to your friends? Why or why not?

I just answered this question, am I wrong?

What aspect of Christy Lynn’s performance would you have changed?

Nothing mediocre reader for a mediocre book I found that fitting.

Did Cruel Deception inspire you to do anything?

    Nope

    Any additional comments?

Sad story, I don't really care for true crime that involves abuse of small children, it makes me physically ill. This book was not awful, it was okay.

    "Too Many Detours"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The author kept quoting short comments all the way through that the characters had made which became very irritating. A general description of their opinion/attitude would have been better. Plus he kept jumping all over the place so not a smooth transition

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

No. The plot would have been interesting if written by a better author. The subject matter is an intriguing one but not documented well here at all.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Christy Lynn?

    Ye

    Any additional comments?

Chapter two wasn't edited so all the way through the whole chapter was the sound of the narrator clearing her throat, coughing, repeating clusters of words several times to get the correct intonation and making funny noises in her quest to get it right. How this slipped past the editor is beyond me. I nearly packed it part way through this chapter as it was very frustrating but hung on in the hope it was the only chapter like this. Luckily it was.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator obviously has a cold. The constant stopping to sniffle then repeat herself is annoying disgusting and insulting. m

What didn’t you like about Christy Lynn’s performance?

She needs to blow her nose sniffle and clear her throat in her own time. just awful

    Any additional comments?

Change narrators then repost the book its worthless as it is

"Good read for a long trip"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - it's interesting on both a mystery book/crime thriller way and also a "can't not look at the accident on the road" way.

What other book might you compare Cruel Deception to and why?

None I can think of off the top of my head, but put it in the category of good medical crime drama

If you could give Cruel Deception a new subtitle, what would it be?

    Mommie Dearest Part Deux

    "Fascinating true story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - it's an in depth look at a serious but highly misunderstood issue.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It did - wondering about all the evidence coming into play and the strength of the Prosecutor and Defense's cases. Total "edge of your seat" book - Gregg Olsen's writing is PHENOMENAL.

What about Christy Lynn’s performance did you like?

She's good - her voice definitely suits this genre.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A story that you can not afford to miss

    Any additional comments?

    Love Gregg Olsen's writing!

"So annoyed by listening to the narrator..."
Would you try another book from Gregg Olsen and/or Christy Lynn?

I would try another book with a different narrator

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The stopping in the beginning made me think something was wrong with my phone, but it's the tone she uses and the voice of all the characters that made me nuts! Surly, they don't all sound surprised every time they speak! She makes everyone sound really "dumb" - in my opinion. It was hard to listen to the whole book!

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Probably

"Such a disturbing story that you can't put down."
What made the experience of listening to Cruel Deception the most enjoyable?

This is a book I read and couldn't put down. Listening to it was like watching a movie of the events. You don't know whether to hate her or feel sorry for her sickness. In the end, you just want to cry for the babies.

    Any additional comments?

One of the best books I have read or heard in a long time.

"The worst audio editing I've ever experienced."
What would have made Cruel Deception better?

Monitoring of the recording process and post-recording editing. Chapter 2 is a disgrace with pauses, repeated false starts, sniffles, throat clearings, etc.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not exactly, but it's not that kind of book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Christy Lynn’s performances?

Possibly, but it might be a long time.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I like true crime stories and this probably would have been considerably more enjoyable with a male narrator.

    Any additional comments?

Personally, I think that this title should be withdrawn; at least, until it can be brought up to snuff technically. I've never had a worse experience reading an audio book (and since I'm blind, I've been doing it all my life) than trying to get through Chapter 2. Didn't *anybody* validate the work before it was released?

Audiojunkie, interested in all under the sun. I find that i enjoy non-fiction better than fiction although Amelia Peabody is the best. :-)

    "Very good true crime"

Enjoyed the book. Gregg Olsen is becoming better and better. I would have liked to understand the mother and her family better, but Olsen probably gave us all that we are likely to get as far as an explanation of her actions and motivations goes.
Definitely one I can listen to again.
