Cross and Burn

Guilt and grief have driven a wedge between long time crime-fighting partners psychologist Tony Hill and ex-DCI Carol Jordan. But just because they're not talking doesn't mean the killing stops. Someone is killing women. Women who bear a disturbing resemblance to Carol Jordan. And when the evidence begins to point in a disturbing direction, thinking the unthinkable seems the only possible answer.

    "Val McDermid at her best"

From the opening chapter you know this is classic, quality crime writing at it's best and a very welcome return for Carol and Tony. This had me gripped from the start, by the plot, the superb characterisation and the relationship between Carol and Tony. There is some unpalatable violence towards women, however it is not gratuitous and is acceptable within the gripping plotline. This book reminds me just how well Val McDermid writes and that she is in a different league to most other crime writers. For those of who find the relationship between Tony and Carol so compelling this is a very satisfying listen.
I always enjoy Saul Reichlin's narration but did find some of the characters voices a little irritating- this, however is a minor fault as his rich, dark voice is well suited to the story.

What didn’t you like about Saul Reichlin’s performance?

his inability to give different voices to the characters. It actively distracted me from the story.

    "A most gripping story"

I just finished listening to Cross And Burn and what a fabulous story! When they say that it keeps you on the edge of the seat it is quite true, I found myself many times seating at the very end of my chair in anticipation! For those who have read all the Jordan&Hill books, it is another step in their "relationship" after what happened in The Retribution, and it gives also a look at what is happening with Jordan's team members. Val McDermid can definitely write a good crime book and this was excellent. As far as the narrator is concerned, it is my first book read by Saul Reichlin and I am pleasantly surprised. I didn't really care much for DCI Fieldings' interpretation (strange scottish accent!) but all in all he did a good job.

    "As usual, a great story."
Would you try another book written by Val McDermid or narrated by Saul Reichlin?

I'd always listen to a book by Val McDermid. She tells a really good story and the magic between Carol and Tony is still there. I hope she won't give up on them.

Her characters become real people in your mind. The story was well put together, and very subtly she made different people seem suspicious. I did not sympathise with the killer, but McDermid still made me a bit sorry for him. Her bad guys are always human.
I wait with bated breath for her next novel.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Can't say one without the other. Carol and Tony. Magic.

What didn’t you like about Saul Reichlin’s performance?

I will try to avoid listening to Saul Reichlin, to me it was torture. Had the book not been so good I would have given up.
Why did the boy have to sound like Frank Spencer from Some Mother's do 'ave 'em? Even Fielding sounded like that sometimes, whining. If a narrator can't do a Scottish accent he should not try to do it. His characterisation failed miserably.

Do you think Cross and Burn needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, I want to hear more about Carol and Tony. The way Val McDermid describes their working together is enthralling.

    "Cross And Burn"

I did not know that there was a series in these books and did in fact do this one first, I was not disappointed its a gripping crime story with Carol the detective and Tony the psychologist it does in fact go back to why these two have called it a day on their relationship, has Carol has a very grisly background and obviously Tony was involved in that, after this book i have added more of this author in my wish list.

Would you consider the audio edition of Cross and Burn to be better than the print version?

Really enjoyed the story, characters as previous books and setting, narrative and plot all move at her usual pace. Her books always hit the mark.

All the characters and the plot

What disappointed you about Cross and Burn?

The reader and style is so slow I had to turn it up to 1.25 to listen- ponderous!!- and story line so boringly unoriginal- I had many attempts but couldn't finish this. Truly a waste of money for me.

"Up to Val's usual standard for these stories"
What did you like most about Cross and Burn?

I always like this author's style. Beautifully written - unputdownable. Psychological and physical plots well devised and delivered in her usual manner. Enjoyed it very much. As an Eng Lit tutor (retired) I appreciate well-written novels.

What other book might you compare Cross and Burn to, and why?

All her other Tony Hill books. All well written and exciting.

    "No more Saul please!"
Would you listen to Cross and Burn again? Why?

As always, a great story with wonderful pace and characters from Val McDermid - especially if you know the back stories and the characters.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

If you can't do a Yorkshire accent then please don't try. The narration was awful and I'll avoid this narrator in the future no matter what the story.

I struggled with the Steig Larsson readings and I believe it's the same narrator. I don't like the style or pace but accept for a non English book that this does actually make some sense. However, for a story set in the North of England the application of accents and the pronunciation of some words was hugely off putting.

    "I love these characters"

I love every one of these books, some more than others. This one was back on form with the crime fighting duo split up by their guilt and inability to cope with a previous tragedy. It was narrated really well and the story reached its usual tense but satisfying conclusion.
