“Michael Boatman gives a first-rate narration in this latest installment in the Alex Cross series. A second narrator, Tom Wopat, artfully portrays the homicidal maniac who plans to destroy Alex by destroying his family. Boatman captures the tension in the plot and keeps the listener engaged with the action. His portrayal of a bereaved Alex Cross--voice trembling with despair--will have listeners spellbound. And his total command of the story is like a zip line to Alex's hell. Though the symphony of terror isn't over at the conclusion of the audiobook, fans of Michael Boatman will revel in his delivery of this captivating thriller.” (AudioFile)
"[Patterson's] books don't pussyfoot around when it comes to the villains. These are bad, bad people... [I, Alex Cross] is political, with a lot of intrigue in high places." (Al Roker, The Today Show)
I am someone who enjoys audible books very much now that they exist. As a young student (real young) I can remember a teacher telling me how books can transport people to different places & open up a whole new world. This is how listening to audible books make me feel. Now if I can just stop falling asleep while listening to them at night I would be fine. Ha ha
For some reason i did not check the reviews of this book this time. And that was stupid! although the intrigue & suspense was there in full, the ending was not. i do not believe Patterson can pull this book from the grave. The damage is done. People can not be yanked up & down back & forth like that & not be affected. Sorry Patterson, this book goes back for a full refund.
I have read every book in this series and can honestly say I was worried something like this would someday happen.Don't want to ruin it for anyone so I will just say "bring on the next one." Quickly please!!!
It was okay but Alex seems to be more interested in political and psychology than solving the mystery.
Performance was fine.
Disappointed in the tease for another Cross book and more disappointed when the last 20 minutes or so was an advertisement for another not Cross book.
I wish I had read other reviews before buying this book. The ending was as stupid as any I have ever seen in a book. There is NO satisfaction from listening †o this book. I would not recommend it unless you are a serious Alex Cross fan. Even then, wait until the next one comes out so you will have an ending to this one.

So far, this is the most emotionally charged of the Cross Series. Not only do we see Det. Alex Cross as the meticulously organized and systematic Officer but the book depicts his human side as a loving father, husband and just one human being elated to savor the accomplishments of his family but also at a total loss after his a five-fold tragedy befell in his own household. Mr. Patterson is one author who knows how to pierce that pain center in our brain and share the misery of Mr. Cross as he helplessly deal with his tragedy and how he succumbed to a vacuum when he realized that there is nothing else out there to live or die for. But then, there is a Sequel to this book and Mr. Patterson trumps again to keep us hoping that with one stroke of his pen, the plot reverses to a complete 360 degree revolution.
Reading has always been my guilty pleasure. I would take stacks of books from the library. Now I listen to Audible.
OMG! What a book! When is the next one coming, I don't know if I can wait!!!
This was a typical Reacher novel, but one of the better ones. The story was pretty fresh, but keeping in line with Patterson's desire to make things a bit darker. Reacher seemed to have a touch of character development and growth, and the secondary characters were interesting.
Holy smokes was the performance bad. It it weren't for the fact I'm relatively new to Audible and recently returned something (I guess I have guilt), I would have returned this and gotten the print. I managed to get through it, but with Great Difficulty.
The narrator's accent (southern-ish drawl) was distracting but I could get over that. His pacing was pretty languid... and I could get over that. What I couldn't get over was his horrible characterizations. This is *especially* true of the female protagonist.
We all know and appreciate that Reacher likes a strong woman. No exception here, and it's one of the better female characters. However, her voice and narration made her sound weak, insipid, unsure, meek, and... welll... throw some other awful adjectives to make her small and unappealing. It was a complete juxtaposition from the writing, difficult to listen to, and really took away from the story.
If you're a reader, I would do this one in print.
If you exclusively listen, you'll be able to make it through. However I would never seek out anything this guy has narrated just because of his work.
I have twenty James Patterson audible books in my library. In the many years I've been a member of Audible.com I think I've returned 2 or 3 books. THIS ONE I AM RETURNING. I am sorry I bought it. It was upsetting to listen to and TERRIBLE how it ends--author's note notwithstanding.
