Creation in Death: In Death, Book 25

Eve has seen this crime scene before: the artfully arranged body of a young brunette, arms spread, palms up, body marked by the signs of prolonged and painful torture. Carved into her torso is the time it took her to die - in hours, minutes, and seconds. And on the third finger of her left hand has been placed a silver ring.

Publisher's Summary

Eve has seen this crime scene before: the artfully arranged body of a young brunette, arms spread, palms up, body marked by the signs of prolonged and painful torture. Carved into her torso is the time it took her to die - in hours, minutes, and seconds. And on the third finger of her left hand has been placed a silver ring.

Eve is catapulted back to a case nine years earlier, when a man the media tagged "The Groom" put the city on edge with a killing spree that took the lives of four women in 15 days. Eve and her partner, Feeney, her friend and mentor, couldn't stop him before he disappeared, only to resurface in other parts of the world to kill and kill again. But now The Groom seems to have come back to where he started.

When it turns out that The Groom's most recent victim was employed by Eve's billionaire husband, Roarke, she brings him onto the case - a move that proves fitting when it becomes chillingly clear that the killer has made it personal. The corpse was washed in products from a store Roarke owns and laid out on a sheet his company manufactures.

With the Groom's monstrous return, Eve is determined to finish him once and for all. Familiar with his methods, she knows that he has already grabbed his next victim. But his sights are set on the biggest challenge of his illustrious career - an abduction that will test his skills and that promises to give him satisfaction as he's never known. Time is running out on another woman's life...and for Eve.

Crack another case with Eve Dallas.

    "Fantastic as usual."

Love the characters, love the voices, love all the books. The excitement, the exhaustion and caring really come thru in this one. Love that Eve doesn't stop and will do whatever is necessary to save someone else from being killed, even endangering herself. This was one of my very favorites I think because Roark really got to be totally involved and see how the cops worked from the inside. KEEP WRITING, KEEP RECORDING! They are wonderful. For those who said some of the books, the voices were off. Be quiet. Just keep listening and all gets back on track. I NEVER had trouble distinguishing who was talking. These books were written to be listened too.

As all ways J.D. Robb has been a good read, and the narrator does a great job in getting you to be able to see all the characters in full view.

    "Sickening, not entertaining."
Would you try another book from J. D. Robb and/or Susan Ericksen?

Yes. I've been listening to the series & enjoyed it up until now. This one stands out as, well, gruesome.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not for me. The others in the series posed interesting puzzles. This one is something I can't stand to contemplate.

    "Eve becomes a Target"
Where does Creation in Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Somewhere in the middle. I've listened to quite a few audiobooks in the past year, too.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eve, Roarke, Capt. Finney. I always enjoy hearing Eve's voice, so sure of her self and always trying to sound tough. Roarke's Irish brogue is done very well. Capt. Finney gets a chance to show some emotion in this one.

What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?

She gave a very good preformance with this one. All the voices were right on.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. i took breaks to think about what I was reading.

    Any additional comments?

    No.

I am a retired Court Reporter and I LOVE books. All kinds of books but my favorites are mysteries and period books. I like civil war books and some biographies.

    "Best so far"
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

By far the best of the In Death series so far. I didn't pick the killer until nearly the end, which to me indicates a well-written book.

What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I'm actually having trouble bringing myself to listen to anything else because I enjoy Susan's readings so much. She's sooo good with voices and pretty good with most accents too.

    "Creation in Death"

"The Groom" is back and this time he has made the game personal. Dallas has a murderer from nine years ago come back. But this time she is not a young Detective, and the worse thing is that "The Groom" wants Dallas to play the game with him.
Dallas and her team all want to put this man behind bars for all the women he has killed, but feels are hot because he has gotten away before. Feeney and Dallas have to go back to their old notes to try to find something they missed the first time.
    J. D. Robb has written another great story and Susan Ericksen does a great job with the narration as always.

"The best Eve Dallas so far!"

I don't know how she does it! Developing all of these characters and an intricate storyline that flows so smoothly is quite a feat.

I love the narrator's ability to create the voice for each character. The voices bring each character to life.

    "Interesting Twist"

This installment of the series takes a different approach. In "Creation," we are brought back to a case Eve worked on LONG before we, as readers, ever met her. So we are getting more of a glimpse into her past, and not just the ugly parts we've already heard over and over again. This time we get to hear about her training, her mentoring, and some of the experiences she had that lead her to her well-earned Lieutenant's badge. You know, some of the GOOD times!

I gave it four stars because, well, this one creeped me out moreso than the others. On another day, I might have given it five stars just BECAUSE it creeped me out more. Either way, it's a valuable addition to the series and the characters we have all grown to love so much!

    "Dreadful narration, ridiculous accents/characters"
What would have made Creation in Death better?

The narration was so ridiculous with dreadful accents and voices for characters that were so awful they made me laugh out loud! Totally detracted from the story such that I couldn't bear to listen and will request a refund.

What was most disappointing about J. D. Robb’s story?

    The narrator.

How could the performance have been better?

    Different and better narrator.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Ridicule and disappointment in abundance.

    Any additional comments?

Will be asking for a refund, can't get past the first 20 mins.
