Publisher's summary

The infamous Dodd murders are hardly among Eastport's proudest legacies. So when best-selling true-crime author Carolyn Rathbone arrives to research the case for a new book, the locals in the seaside town let her know that she's about as welcome as a spoiled clam. But surely no one would harm a crime writer out of a sense of civic pride--or would they?

Jake has her own problems, from the mysteries of old-house insulation to an anonymous caller plaguing her with death threats. But with Carolyn's arrival, the slayings of the wealthy Dodd women suddenly go from cold case to hot topic - much to someone's dismay. For Carolyn Rathbone's untimely investigation has unearthed a string of deadly secrets that a cunning killer is grimly determined to rebury, right along with Carolyn herself.

Ehhh

These got worse as the series went on. Maybe the author was getting tired of her characters

Slight change

With the books in this series, there is a slight change it seems to me. She does let the cops talk more and lets them try to get something done first but who allows anyone to question suspects? The main character still tells everyone to shut up we are doing my way and always is angry as she does it. Then her way gets them into trouble every time! Makes it worse for anyone who is with her. Sigh when does she learn her actions causes her loved ones pain. If i was her friend/family I would not do anything with her because my life is always at risk and she also has to have it her way all the time. I was hoping that this would change a growth in the this series that the main character would learn either by a friend or family member saying look stay away from me, you put me and my family at risk by thinking you know everything when you don't and until you give this up we can not see each other again.

Amazing read.

I loved the animated characters, and am constantly surprised by the quality of writing that takes me into the story.

Cozy Mystery or thriller?

I have noticed my anxiety levels going up since Sarah Graves changed her writing of this series. From Trap Door on we no longer follow Jake in the first person, instead all the characters are in 3rd person. This makes it possible for Sarah to follow the other characters as closely and so there is danger, cruelty, and violence throughout the book and we are left hanging through the story in a state of fear and anxiety. I feel that the stories are more like thrillers than cozy mystery. I loved the characters, especially Jake and Wade, but the change gives us much less personal time with the main characters and the focus becomes more on the crimes and violence. Thrillers are not my favorite genres but cozy mysteries are. A bit of a shame, not sure I want to read the last 3 books.

too dark

more thriller than humor. too much violence and pain for my taste. earlier books were better.

It’s a wrap

I very much enjoyed this series, but the last two books took a turn down a dark road that dead ended the series for me. Gone was the fun home improvement antics, the family dinners, and the quirky community. I hate to leave things unfinished but I don’t need to listen to books that haunt my dreams.

Story and narrator are outstanding!

I’ve listened to all of Sarah Graves’s series so far. They just keep getting better! And Lindsay Ellison is absolutely perfect in her narration! From her accurate Maine accent (I lived there) to her emotive reading, I couldn’t stop listening.
