Cover Her Face | [P.D. James]

Cover Her Face

Though Sally Jupp came from the village home for unmarried mothers, she seemed the ideal girl to help Mrs Maxie run a large house and look after her invalid husband. But the real Sally, pretty, ambitious and clever, was very different from the docile, repentant character she seemed to be. Murder shattered the tranquility of her new home and Chief Detective Inspector Adam Dalgliesh arrived in the peace of a country Sunday to investigate the killing of a character as mysterious as Sally herself.

"sound quality OK in E format"

I did not experience the muffled sound quality mentioned by a previous reviewer, and overall I liked Marsden's narration -- The style is a "read" novel rather than one narrated with many voices and much inflection, however. I think that style suits James' novels very well. Marsden did read quickly, though, and for one long segment near the climax, much too quickly for listening enjoyment.

The novel itself is a cleverly plotted traditional English cozy, but James had not yet developed her power of evoking atmosphere in this first novel. I downloded "Cover Her Face" after enjoying a couple of James' more recent Dalgleish mysteries so much that I wanted to start at the beginning of the series to learn about the development of the Dalgleish character. In this I was somewhat disappointed because Dalgleish appears already as a master detective and there are few glances inside his head. It was still a worthy listen and I'll happily move on to the next in the series.

"Old fashioned & charming 'who done it?'"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I recommend it as an easy listening, easy to follow, well developed story with a twist.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Detective Dalgleish appears to me as an unassuming, charming and shrewd character.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Roy Marsden?

Yes, but at times during the narration I lost track of which character was speaking. There appeared to be a lack of distinction between the tone of voice he used for the characters.

    "Disappointing"

First time Ms. James has disappointed. Too many characters introduced too rapidly and not effectively developed—and not very interesting to boot, a convoluted plot difficult to follow, a final scene perhaps meant as a parody of Hercule Poirot calling a meeting of all the suspects so that in a tour de force he could expose the murderer. Just did not work, for me at least.

    "Narration is bad"

The person doing the narration is fine, but the sound quality was pretty bad. It sounds like they held a microphone up to 8 track tape player to make the downloadable file.

I would have gotten more from buying the paperback.

"So glad to go back to an oldie but goodie."

Enjoy MYSTERIES. Enjoy good writing. Mysteries as distinct from police drama. Hadn't read or listened to a PD James in years and years. So glad I decided to go back now and listen. This was a "who-done-it."

"Awful performance of a very good book"

Excellent story spoiled by terrible reading from Roy Marsden. It was very clear when he had started reading after a break as no effort was made to ensure continuity of voice tone. This along with several instances of Mr Marsden either not understanding what a full stop or comma is for, or being too lazy to vocalise them, made it very difficult to listen to. Much as I love PD James, I shall steer clear of any that are read by Roy Marsden in the future.
