Story
In the unbearable heat of another sultry Washington, D.C., summer, a serial killer is on the loose. Dr. Tess Court, one of the capital’s most successful psychiatrists, wants nothing to do with the case—until the police convince her to lend a hand to the lead investigator, legendary ladies’ man Detective Ben Paris. Scarred by his family’s history, Ben has even less use for shrinks than Tess has for him—but the forces of animal magnetism and a shared desire to catch the demented criminal known as “The Priest” inexorably erode the walls they’ve built.

Story
Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. Flying past towering pillars of smoke, parachuting down to the edge of an all-consuming blaze, shoveling and sawing for hours upon hours, days at a time, all to hold the line and push back against the raw power of Mother Nature. But there’s also little else as thrilling - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are one of the most exclusive firefighting squads in the nation, and the job is in Rowan’s blood: her father is a legend in the field. She’s been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday.

One of the Better Ones
This was the first book in the "Death" series that I read and it was so good, I started reading the series from the beginning. JD Robb has developed a world of complex characters that the reader begins to think of as close personal friends. The plot line is good, taking enough twists to keep you guessing. Dallas is a very believable character and one in which many women who are strong, capable people sick and tired of stupidity can easily relate to. The love scenes get a little tedious for me, but nevertheless are signature pieces of JD Robb. They don't ruin the plot in the least. Susan Erickson is at her best as the reader and the voices are crisp and identifiable. This is well worth buying.

Really a good one
I truly enjoyed this book because is shows Dallas in a more vulnerable way which made the story a good one. I was surprised. This book and the other books in the series are very entertaining. they don't all have to make absolute sense all the time. Just keep me interested and entertained. that's what I read for - to get away, and this book, and the other books in the series keep you enjoying the characters and leave you wanting more. For me that's what it's all about

I wish all audiobooks were this good
As I go through the series a second time I still find it very hard to put down. To give Susan Ericson a five star review, doesn't do it justice. Many performances that surely deserve perfect reviews do not come close to the performance of these books.
It is easy to forget that this is just one person. The voices and characterization are so amazing that it feels like your listening to a full cast production.
The story is so character driven, that the futuristic setting melts away, although JD Robb's (Nora Roberts) vision of the future holds up 20 years after this story was written.
The entire in In Death series is a shining example of what an audiobook is, can be and should be.

About as expected
Having read several of the books in this series, I was not disappointed. However, I still feel the author spends a little too much time on her romantic happenings with her hubby. Otherwise, a fun read.

Susan Erickson rules in Dallas' Books
I can't even imagine a better (or different) narrator doing Eve Dallas in the "In Death" novels by J.D.Robb (i.e.: Nora Roberts). She gives exquisite detail to each and every character and you wonder how one woman can do this. I never wonder who is speaking, unlike so many other narrators.
As to the plot..well it's typical Eve Dallas..and the publishers synopsis does a fair job of giving readers the basic outline, so I won't go into detail.
You know that, if you follow these books..in the high 30's now, you'll buy it..and if now..do start with number 1and rad them in order-they build on each other.
A few wishes...Eve should, by now, not fe so fearful of public displays of affection with Rourke...it's gotten old. Nor with the PDA between Peabody and McNab. It's been, like, 20 books by now. Get over it Eve. They're a couple and Peabody isn't you..she isn't afraid of her sexuality nor of McNab's kookieness. (Hows that a word from the 70s?)
And, I wish, all the therapy Eve has done with Dr. Mira had given her closure on her past. 15+ books ago she found her mother and went thru a big dramatic closure..what happened? (Dallas in Dallas or something similar) Most of the characters grow in this series-except Eve. And why not? Aren't we constant readers ready for Eve to freaking grow up? Many of us have had troubled pasts and we've worked our way thru them. Nora-honey-hear me??????
Roberts need to find some different hooks for Eve..not that I'll quit reading, but sometimes I get tired of the same old same old.
How about you?
You do know that, if you're a steady reader of the series you've already bought the book.

I could listen to Roarke forever
I love Nora Roberts, but resisted reading her as J. D. Robb. I decided to try this summer and got the Audible version of the first in her "In Death" series. I absolutely love the books. I think the character of Eve is real enough. Although I realize that the character of Roarke is only a dream, I pretend that he really could exist. The narration is excellent, and the narrator is one of my favorites. I'm reading them in order.

I love this series!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I truly enjoy this series, and this is my favorite book so far. After reading some of the other reviews I decided to voice my own opinion. My mother got me started on this series, and since I caved and listened to the first one I have been hooked.
What did you like best about this story?
I love the characters in these novels, they are well written and I feel like I know them all myself. I cheer for them in their triumphs and weep for their losses. I want my own personal Roarke as well. I would really like to know his full name though. No one calls him anything but Roarke.....ever.
What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Susan Ericksen is the most amazing narrator I have heard since I started listening about a year ago. She is phenomenal in her abilities to give a character a personality and a specific voice that belongs to them. She never falters either, when switching from one person's dialogue to the next. Amazing!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I have been working through these novels in short order. I want to say I have difficulty putting them down, but I guess I guess the reality is I have difficulty turning them off.
Any additional comments?
The only thing I would change in these books is the amount or at least the in depth descriptions of the intimate relations between Roarke and Eve. I love that Roarke is there for her and has changed her life, but I agree with others when they say that J.D. Robb gets a little too graphic for comfort. I have to make sure I listen in my headphones so my daughter doesn't hear it.

A conspiracy, as advertised
I always have a hard time with murders built around conspiracies because it’s just unbelievable that so many people would maintain silence over the course of multiple deaths. Doctor Mira being allowed to treat/test her friend Eve also continues to irk me because that’s a clear conflict of interest in a series that cares about cop conflicts. Finally, the ease with which Roarke can pick any lock, hack any database, and get information from any business (because he pretty much owns the world) was working on steroids here. I can deal with one or two eye-roll plot cheats, but it felt like all of the author’s go-to plot cheats were on display.
Putting aside the eye-rolls, however, this was otherwise a pretty good installment. I especially like the threat to Eve’s badge and how her team rallies around her. It gave folks like Feeney, Mavis or even her reporter friend to do something different in this book.

Wow! I felt Eve's pain in this one!
One of the most emotional " In Death" books yet! JD Robb pulled at my heart with Eve's internal struggles throughout this book. The mystery was second to the the personal struggle Eve faces and the love that pulls her through!
