Publisher's summary

On New Year's Day, Detective Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch fields a call that a dog has found a bone - a bone that the dog's owner, a doctor, feels certain is human.

That chance discovery leads Bosch to a shallow grave in the Hollywood hills, evidence of a murder committed more than 20 years earlier. It's a cold case, but it stirs up Bosch's memories of his own childhood as an orphan in the city. Digging through police reports and hospital records, tracking down street kids and runaways from the 1970s, Bosch finds a family ripped apart by an absence - and a trail, ever more tenuous, into a violent, terrifying world.

As the case takes Bosch deeper into the past, a rookie cop named Julia Brasher brings him alive in the present in a way no one has in years. Bosch has been warned about the trouble that comes with dating a rookie, but no warning could withstand the heat between them - or prepare Bosch for the explosions when the case takes a hard turn.

Drawing on the "precision-tooled twists" and "wellspring of authentically lurid detail" (Los Angeles Magazine) that have made him one of the fasted-selling novelists at work today, Michael Connelly has written a riveting, hard-edged, and unforgettable thriller.

Don't miss Detective Harry Bosch on the case in these Michael Connelly crime fiction novels.

Another Micael Connelly success

Kept in suspense the whole way. As usual, Harry Bosch saves the day. Loved the book.

A comment on chance and the banality of evil.

Would you listen to City of Bones: Harry Bosch Series, Book 8 again? Why?

I've read several reviews on this book, and I have to admit to some trepidation in listening to something on the subject of child murder, particularly in the evening. But, the author introduces a subject almost as chilling as that, chance events and their misappropriation to the purpose of evil. Most books you read point to a cast of characters as the 'bad guys' ,and they abound in this tale, but the real villain is the coin flip, the unpredictable chance event. From Vietnam, to a lover lost, to a child's murder the role of unpredictable are the focus, so much so, the careful, usually successful, reasoned approach used by Bosch to analyze and solve a crime fail him completely. It's a tour de force on how the narratives we construct to explain our reality can be a pitifully inadequate contrivances to explain the inexplicable.

City of Bones

The story kept my interest as it moved from one suspect to another. The conclusion was not what I expected, but will make an interesting story in the next Bosch book.

Technical difficulties.

The last half of this recording kept stopping regularly. Very annoying. It’s happened on previous Michael Connelly audio books. Needs to be researched.

deeper and more personal.

Michael Connelly got deeper into this story, almost lost but held on tight to the line. Couldn't wait to get back into it, great ending

the best of the b-side bosch's

The performance wasn't perfect. The voicing of edgar was particularly weak, but over all it wasn't a big impediment to enjoyment. Mr Fernandez is better than 95% of all narrators and the experience was enjoyable if imperfectly accented.
As far as the story, it was classic bosch. Not as good as the concrete blonde, but still quite good. All the elements were there, but the ending lacked a bit of finesse. i was done with the book 1 hour before end, but they did throw in a surprise that left me a bit underwhelmed. overall solid listen. i'm at the end of the line with bosch, this was a nice story to slot in.

Captivating story that weaves the lives and deaths of several characters into the life of Harry Bosch.

No bones about it, Harry Bosch keeps you listening

I enjoyed listening to Connelly's book. I like the fact that Harry Bosch is presented as a seasoned tuff detective.Peter Fernandez does a good job in bringing you up close to Harry, Julia, Edgar and all the other characters. The story keeps moving, it has surprise, and action.
