Editorial reviews

Is Lilly Burton's new love a serial killer? This listen puts you in Lily's head as, trapped in her snowbound cabin with him, she vacillates dramatically between overpowering lust and gripping fear. A great reading and great story equal great suspense from the amazing Sandra Brown.

From the moment Lilly hits Ben Tiernay with her car while making her way down the mountain from her cabin during a blizzard, the story grabs your interest and never lets go until the surprising conclusion. The reader is wonderful, using different voices for each character and authentic southern accents. Bottom line: If gripping claustrophobia and excruciating suspense could be heard, this is what it would sound like.

Publisher's summary

Cleary, North Carolina, is a sleepy mountain town, the kind of place where criminal activity is usually limited to parking violations. Not so, lately. Four women have disappeared from Cleary over the past two years. And there's always a blue ribbon left near the spot where each of the women was last seen. There are no bodies, no other clues, and no suspicion as to who their abductor might be. And now, another woman has disappeared without a trace.

It is to this backdrop that Lilly Martin returns to close the sale of her mountain cabin, marking the end of her turbulent eight-year marriage to Dutch Burton, Cleary's chief of police. Dutch's reluctance to let her go isn't Lilly's only obstacle. As she's trying to outrun a snowstorm, her car skids on the icy road and strikes a man. She recognizes the injured man as Ben Tierney, whom she'd met the previous summer. They're forced to wait out the storm in the cabin, but as the hours of their confinement mount, Lilly begins to wonder if the greatest danger to her safety isn't the blizzard outside, but the mysterious man right beside her. Is Ben Tierney the feared abductor? Or is he who he claims to be...her rescuer from harm and from the tragedy that haunts her?

"Lust, jealousy, and murder suffuse Brown's crisp thriller, set in the snowbound mountains of North Carolina....The snowy suspense will cool off Brown's fans during the dog days of summer." (Publishers Weekly)

Surprise like

What did you love best about Chill Factor?

I was skeptical about a romance thriller. I usually like medical thrillers without all the romance and sex. But I must admit that I really liked it. She is very good at combining both a great mistery/thriller with juicy sex.

What about Stephen Lang’s performance did you like?

He did a good job with the characters but the distinguishing voices could've definitely been better.

Almost unbearable suspense

What other book might you compare Chill Factor to and why?

I haven't listened or read any comparable book regarding suspense

Which character – as performed by Stephen Lang – was your favorite?

Ben Tierney - Lang's manly, low voice matches Tierney's appeal to Lilly (and me:)

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Blue or not blue

Any additional comments?

I recommend this book to everyone with a liking for for criminal suspense and erotic elements

Wasn't sure "who done it" til the end...GREAT!

I enjoyed that there were several stories going on at once and all were important! Sandra Brown always ties her well woven stories on a neat little bow...but it's not always happily ever after...that's cool! Enjoyed the story a lot!!

Truly Great Narration Storyline Soso!

Had a difficult time finishing this story. Without details, the storyline was predictable and anticipatory. However, I'm a new fan of Mr. Lang's narrative skills. I'll be keeping an eye for additional works by him!

You Need To Remember! It's a Sandra Brown novel!

If it's pure entertainment you want...purchase this audible listen. If you're searching for an American classic, stay away. This book thoroughly did its' job of entertaining me during my drive to and from my job. It made me forget that I was driving! (I shouldn't say that too loud!) Seriously, I found myself sitting in my car to get a few more seconds of listening time. The ending was great and I will move on to another Sandra Brown audible book.

Well written but not very deep.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I would but I wouldn't listen to it a second time.

Would you be willing to try another book from Sandra Brown? Why or why not?

This was the third I listened to and my least favorite. I'll give her another try in respect to the other two.

Could you see Chill Factor being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Yes, a very 1998 thriller like Dontes Peak.

Any additional comments?

The story was nothing original and I figured all the plot out a third of the way through. She gave it a good try with this story line. Feels like that's all it was, a good try.

I'd have peeked at the ending ...

if I had had the print version - I couldn't stand the suspense. I was dying to know how it ended! I loved it. I enjoyed all the quirky- slightly sleazy -characters in that little town... just about any one of them could have "done it". I thought it was very well done. I loved the touch of romance amidst the suspense, with not too much gore or violence.
