Editorial reviews

Is Lilly Burton's new love a serial killer? This listen puts you in Lily's head as, trapped in her snowbound cabin with him, she vacillates dramatically between overpowering lust and gripping fear. A great reading and great story equal great suspense from the amazing Sandra Brown.

From the moment Lilly hits Ben Tiernay with her car while making her way down the mountain from her cabin during a blizzard, the story grabs your interest and never lets go until the surprising conclusion. The reader is wonderful, using different voices for each character and authentic southern accents. Bottom line: If gripping claustrophobia and excruciating suspense could be heard, this is what it would sound like.

Publisher's summary

Cleary, North Carolina, is a sleepy mountain town, the kind of place where criminal activity is usually limited to parking violations. Not so, lately. Four women have disappeared from Cleary over the past two years. And there's always a blue ribbon left near the spot where each of the women was last seen. There are no bodies, no other clues, and no suspicion as to who their abductor might be. And now, another woman has disappeared without a trace.

It is to this backdrop that Lilly Martin returns to close the sale of her mountain cabin, marking the end of her turbulent eight-year marriage to Dutch Burton, Cleary's chief of police. Dutch's reluctance to let her go isn't Lilly's only obstacle. As she's trying to outrun a snowstorm, her car skids on the icy road and strikes a man. She recognizes the injured man as Ben Tierney, whom she'd met the previous summer. They're forced to wait out the storm in the cabin, but as the hours of their confinement mount, Lilly begins to wonder if the greatest danger to her safety isn't the blizzard outside, but the mysterious man right beside her. Is Ben Tierney the feared abductor? Or is he who he claims to be...her rescuer from harm and from the tragedy that haunts her?

"Lust, jealousy, and murder suffuse Brown's crisp thriller, set in the snowbound mountains of North Carolina....The snowy suspense will cool off Brown's fans during the dog days of summer." (Publishers Weekly)

Suspenseful yet fictional

Great story and characters. However a big flaw in the plot prevents me from rating it higher-- can you say "Rescue snowmobiles'? Surely somebody (especially the police) in a mountain town would have thought of using snowmobiles as a rescue vehicle in a snowstorm. This kept the book always at a very fictional level.

wow just wow 👌

did anybody else cry at the end? this was soooo good. for me, a certified Crime&mystery junky it started slow. but somewhere it picked up and the suspence wow wow wow it does make you want to peak ahead to put a end to the agony but very well put together. my only tiny issue was the narrator... several time all the voices sounded the same and it could be confusing. and these long pauses at the end of chapter but other than than perfection.

Perfect!

I listen to approximately 3 books a week, for 4 years now. I’m VERY picky when it comes to writing, premise, and narration. All is well done. This is in my favorites list.

Chilling Unease

Sandra Brown has a knack for writing characters that do almost nothing to garner respect or esteem. This story had no one person to cling to as "the hero" and many were suspect of malice but I could not put it down. It seems that even flawed characters can be incredibly compelling. This was a chilling story with unsuspecting heroes.

Kept interest

This was an older book. It had way too much explicit sex for my taste. None of the characters were really appealing. Most of them lacking anything you’d want to root for. Was pretty easy to figure out who the bad guy was. But it kept me listening so there is that.

I’m not a big fan of the narrator. He was ok but I didn’t like the accents on the men. Or the teacher.

So good! Loved it!

I have read several Sandra Brown books and I truly enjoy them. Chill Factor a big favorite! So good! Suspenseful and exciting. Stephen Lang Was lawesome at all the voices he used! I thought more than one person was reading! He made me so involved each character’s personality! Kudos!

Great ending

The book starts great and ends great. It's in between that had me considering shutting it off. But I didn't. I pushed on and found it to be worth it.
