Editorial reviews

Is Lilly Burton's new love a serial killer? This listen puts you in Lily's head as, trapped in her snowbound cabin with him, she vacillates dramatically between overpowering lust and gripping fear. A great reading and great story equal great suspense from the amazing Sandra Brown.

From the moment Lilly hits Ben Tiernay with her car while making her way down the mountain from her cabin during a blizzard, the story grabs your interest and never lets go until the surprising conclusion. The reader is wonderful, using different voices for each character and authentic southern accents. Bottom line: If gripping claustrophobia and excruciating suspense could be heard, this is what it would sound like.

Publisher's summary

Cleary, North Carolina, is a sleepy mountain town, the kind of place where criminal activity is usually limited to parking violations. Not so, lately. Four women have disappeared from Cleary over the past two years. And there's always a blue ribbon left near the spot where each of the women was last seen. There are no bodies, no other clues, and no suspicion as to who their abductor might be. And now, another woman has disappeared without a trace.

It is to this backdrop that Lilly Martin returns to close the sale of her mountain cabin, marking the end of her turbulent eight-year marriage to Dutch Burton, Cleary's chief of police. Dutch's reluctance to let her go isn't Lilly's only obstacle. As she's trying to outrun a snowstorm, her car skids on the icy road and strikes a man. She recognizes the injured man as Ben Tierney, whom she'd met the previous summer. They're forced to wait out the storm in the cabin, but as the hours of their confinement mount, Lilly begins to wonder if the greatest danger to her safety isn't the blizzard outside, but the mysterious man right beside her. Is Ben Tierney the feared abductor? Or is he who he claims to be...her rescuer from harm and from the tragedy that haunts her?

"Lust, jealousy, and murder suffuse Brown's crisp thriller, set in the snowbound mountains of North Carolina....The snowy suspense will cool off Brown's fans during the dog days of summer." (Publishers Weekly)

Excellent mystery, that keeps you guessing!

Excellent mystery, that keeps you guessing! The only downside was a number of awkward editing silences, where I thought my app had shut down...but overall, an excellent audiobook! #AwkwardEditing #Gripping #Suspenseful #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes

Not great

I love Sandra brown but the only good part of this book was the ending and even that was predictable. It was a snore until the last couple chapters and the performance was subpar at best

Chill Factor Another Great Sandra Brown

What made the experience of listening to Chill Factor the most enjoyable?

Chill Factor is yet another great creation by Sandra Brown. While I don't think her perfection (she has had a dud or two) this one stands up and out in brilliant fashion.

There is a serial killer on the loose and nobody knows who it is.

After selling and packing up her camp with her ex-husband, Lilly is on her way down a mountain when a snowstorm hits in all out fury. Unbelievably, in the desolate, secluded and remote area she almost hits a man with her car. She stops to offer Ben Tierney assistance and takes her back to her cabin. Is Ben Tierney the killer everyone from the local PD to the FBI is looking for?

The hits, twists and turns come so quickly and out of nowhere! It left me guessing to the very end, is he is or isn't he… An absolutely amazing thriller with bits of naughtiness and a secret that is not revealed until the last five minutes. Excellent!

The narrator does a phenomenal job even as half of the book is from Lilly's perspective. One might think his low gravelly voice would distract but it doesn't, not the least bit.

I would recommend this book without reservation. If you hadn't guessed already by my review!

Notes: some violence, & a few "mature" scenes

Chilly like a back fire

This is what I see as a typical book with all the elements to grow to something good. Police, an environment that looks nice but is potentially dangerous, good/bad characters, etc. It starts slow (hence the 4 starts), but gains speed in the middle. In the final quarter things are really happening.
Sandra did write a believable book that has the nice balance of detective and adventure.
