Publisher's summary

Her name is Clara Rinker, a Southern woman, trim, pleasant, attractive, and the best hit woman in the business. She isn't showy; she just goes quietly about her business, collects her money, and goes home.

It's when she's hired for a job in Minnesota that things become complicated for her. A defense attorney wants a rival eliminated, and that's fine. But then a witness survives, the attorney starts acting weird, this big cop Davenport gets on her case, and loose ends begin popping up faster than on an unraveling sweater.

Lucas has no idea of the toll the case is about to take on him. For of all the criminals he has hunted during his life, none has been as efficient or as ferociously intelligent as the one who is about to start hunting him, and none has known so well what his weak spots are...and how to penetrate them.

Good as Lucas Davenport Gets

You like it when John Sanford writes a Lucas Davenport novel? Then you'll like this tale of battling assassin babes. A tad less blood than usual, but the body per credit ratio is high. Richard Ferrone is Davenport... Nuff said.

Loved every minute

What a great book. Wild ride with crazy people and Oh, do I love the narrator. Richard Ferrone does a perfect job. He's so good I'd feel cheated if I had to read one of these instead of listening to him read it.

My all time favorite Davenport book!

The bad girls in this book make it the best Davenport book. To be honest, I disliked Davenport and all the cops the most in this book. They played dirty in a way I have never seen. I read this series years ago and now I'm listening to the entire series again. Even this time around I still loved Clara Rinker and even crazy Carmel Loan.

Clara Rinker:best Bad Girl Ever

I like these 'Prey' books. That being said, this is my favorite so far because of the anti-hero, Clara Rinker. She rings true psychologically and that's unusual in books of this genre. She's a lot more authentic than anyone in the series to date, including Lucas, who is often woefully one dimensional. Well written, Mr Sandford!

A Wild Ride With Crazy People

As the story developed, this story made me think of the "three stooges." I do like most of the Prey series, but this was not one of them. For me, the overall story line had great promise but it lost me early on, as it never really captured my attention and I lost interest. One reviewer described the story as a "wild ride with crazy people. " As I said, "kinda" amusing rather than a suspenseful drama. The publisher's summary gives a good description of the story, but in general it is about a female killer whose services are sought by a woman through a third party. One person in the triangle turns blackmailer and "it's on" from there.

Some entertainment value started to happen when the killer is clearly on Davenport's radar and loose ends begin popping up all over the place. It was not for me....

The very best

Of all 24 novels this was the first one I read before I chose to read rules of prey. I loved this one as a stand alone book in the series I believe the whole series is worth a listen if you want a real hero type detective

Meet Clara Rinker

I love John Sandford's Prey books, especially the narrated versions because Richard Ferrone is awesome.
One of the reasons I like this book because it introduces Clara, a complex and memorable character. The part about the story I don't care for is the woman who hired Clara. She was a real piece of work. She changed her mind all the time and I was disappointed that Clara went with her crazy ideas so often. Other than that, this is another case where Lucas Davenport goes after the killer with a vengeance. His stubbornness is classic in this book: he suspected the source of all this killing before others saw it. Worthy addition to the Prey series.

Villain Clara Rinker is awesome character

This is one of the best books in the Lucas Davenport series. Lucas is in his prime as he tries to solve the case of the assassinated woman by a woman hit person. More murders of a similar nature are discovered and Lucas believes them to be connected. He knows the original hit was performed by a woman, which is unusual and he gets very close to her, literally, during the hunt. The story is totally fascinating and I listened non stop until it was over - at the expense of a good night's sleep. Clara Rinker, the hit woman, it a great character - one of the best created by Sanford, and he is a master at creating characters. The female lawyer who is involved with both the victims and the hit woman, is also a great character, but she is evil and Clara is more likable.

The narrator is amazing. He is one of the best in the business and is truly the voice of Lucas Davenport.

Davenport and Ferrone make for a delicious listen

Do not read this book. Listen to it. Richard Ferrone is brilliant and turns the book into a performance.
