The sleepy little town of Crozet, Virginia, has seen its share of mischief and mayhem, but nothing like this. While visiting the Mt. Carmel monastery, Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen witnesses a statue of the Virgin Mary cry tears of blood. Legend says this foretells crises, and soon a monk is found frozen to death near the statue. Before long the monk's body disappears, another Crozet citizen dies, and a shocking revelation to an ages-old mystery surfaces. Thankfully, Harry and her sleuthing animals are on the case, unofficially, of course.

Hear talking cat-sleuth Mrs. Murphy in these other mysteries from Rita Mae Brown.

    "Characters Moving On"

I enjoyed the monastic background for this mystery and also the fact that the main characters are moving on in their lives. I also enjoy how Rita Mae Brown's books are always strongly rooted in the weather and in the Virginia landscape.

I do get a bit tired of the mystery resolution for the Mrs. Murphy series though. At the current rate of depletion there shouldn't be anybody left in Crozet. We need a change of pace here, Rita Mae!

    "Okay, not great"

I am a big Mrs. Murphy fan, so any new book by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie is going to be enjoyable to me. This book was a little on the boring side though. I felt that Ms. Brown was too interested in showing her knowledge of monk-life and caused the story to stray of course a bit. It was still entertaining, but I've enjoyed her other books more.

    "There's A Reason..."
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who likes their mysteries on the light side. Not funny, just light content.

Has Cat's Eyewitness turned you off from other books in this genre?

I will not read any other kitty cat mysteries.

How could the performance have been better?

I suppose there is not really a good way to sound like a cat. Although the narrator of the Alexander McCall Smith novels could probably do justice.

    Any additional comments?

I really don't want to hear the author's political and moral leanings expressed through the various characters. I prefer a good story that keeps my attention rather than making me wade through innocuous character conversations. I did not finish the book.

    "A Boring and "Preachy" Mystery"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I read the first two books of this series when they were first released many years ago and found them delightful. Unfortunately, this story did not meet with my expectations from this author. Possibly, if she erased most of the content and started over, I might have enjoyed this book more. I'm sorry to be so brutual, but much of the preaching in the story felt like filler...and really didn't have much to do with the story line.

The scene where the lawman was interrogating one of the characters was really painful to hear.

There is a love story in the pages of this book - it is about an alternative life-style couple. It is the only part of the book that is well written and well read by the narrator. I give cudos to both author and narrator for this part of the book. However, this story line did not lend itself to the mystery and could have been left out of the story altogether without changing the reader's understanding of the book.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I purchased a Kerry Greenwood mystery (Phryne Fisher series) and plan on purchasing another book from that series in the next few days.

How could the performance have been better?

I truly am not sure if the narration was bad and made book intolerable, or if it was the other way around. In a way I wish I had read the hard copy of the book before listening to it. Then I might be able to say exactly what I find so irritating about this book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I was disappointed that there was very little about the wonderful animals in this book. As time goes on, I notice many series getting away from using animals as much as they did in the beginning of the series. If you want to read a Rita Mae Brown book, I can recommend the first two books of the series, but give this one a pass.

    Any additional comments?

I find many of the minor characters to be very unlikeable. In fact, I thought when I read the first couple of books that they would not last long in the series...and here they are. Their only redeeming feature is that most of them like the animals...but it isn't enough to make me care about what they think or feel.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better story line. It just droned on and on and was very unbelievable. Not even cute

Would you ever listen to anything by Rita Mae Brown again?

    Nope

Would you be willing to try another one of Kate Forbes’s performances?

    Yes

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    None

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Something about the way the story was read with just a little too much time in between sentences and phrases bothered me -

Has Cat's Eyewitness turned you off from other books in this genre?

Probably - the story line seemed a little thin and didn't catch my interest

Would you be willing to try another one of Kate Forbes’s performances?

    Probably not

    "Not her best work"

I've read other books by Rita Mae Brown so I was anticipating an exciting and fun story. Unfortunately she was off her game on this one. It was very boring, seemed planned to mention as many brand names of items as could possibly be jammed into one book, and I honestly couldn't get into even caring about who committed the crime. This is the first time I've been disappointed with any audiobook offered here at audible; the stories here are usually wonderful. This one doesn't meet the standard. Skip it and look for something else...there are tons of great books here!
