Publisher's summary

Two killers, one operating in America and the other in Europe, have chosen the FBI's Alex Cross as their prey. One is the megalomaniac Gary Soneji, Cross' nemesis from Along Came a Spider, who takes Cross on a train ride to hell. The other, Mr. Smith, spreads panic through Europe when he strikes London, then Paris. Mr. Smith has been eluding another agent, Thomas Augustine Pierce, and now Pierce must put the case on hold.

Narrated by renowned stage and screen actors Anthony Heald and Keith David, this suspenseful novel will leave the listener wondering who's the cat...and who's the mouse.

I bought the abridged version by mistake

The book was OK, but the abridged version was disappointing. This is 4th book in series and I was trying to catch up. Did not notice it was shorter version. It lacked the detail and insight of previous books. So maybe my fault.

Terrible Audio

This book had a pretty decent plot. It was typical Alex Cross. However, the audio was so bad that I could not listen to it for more than about 30 minutes at a time. I will not download anymore books unless they are available in format 3 or higher. It was a waste of a credit!

Abridge edition leaves gaps in story line

The abridged additions leave out a lot of the background and Alex's thought process. Patterson is such a great writer, and much of the depth of the story line is lost with the abridged recordings. It is not just with this book but others that are abridged as well.

good story but tacky performance

How could the performance have been better?

The use of background music every time the main character had his romantic moments (an there a few) spoiled the performance for me. The 'trying to be sexy saxophone tune' is just very tacky! Pity because the book is actually ok, but this just ruined it for me.

My worst use of a credit ever.

First, I hate abridged books, and I overlooked that significant word when I purchased. It jumps from action scene to action scene without letting any feelings for the characters develop or any sense of curiosity to build. Second, the sound effects were terribly annoying in this book. I didn't have any audio difficulties that other readers mentioned, but the background music and whispering voices signifying thoughts were someone's very bad idea. The fact that the book was abridged probably added to that nuisance factor, as the sound effects in audio books typically accompany the most dramatic scenes, which of course are the only ones to be found in an abridged version. I would have given zero stars for performance had I had the option, and for the story I would have given a question mark. Story development just isn't adequate in abridged books.

Empty Formula Plot but Entertaining Reading

Kept waiting for this mystery to develop into an intelligent plot, but no such luck. Take standard motivations for serial killers and mix it in with a multiple personality, combine with a coded use of first names to spell out the clue and you get a terribly disappointing experience. Be warned.
