"My definitive Radio Holmes"
Many moons ago I used to own all of these Carleton Hobbs/Norman Shelley performances as Holmes & Watson on audiotape, so it was lovely finding at least some of them here on Audible. Despite being recorded in the 50s and 60s the sound quality is good enough. Hobbs and Shelley work very well together as the detecting duo, with a fine balance between their voices, one acerbic and quick, the other bluff and hearty. I adored the way they had Dr Watson open every episode with a gurumphing cough, before launching into the story. Two faults mark this set down from a 5-star listen. Firstly, the choice of stories includes several of his darker tales (The Cardboard Box, The Crooked Man etc), so it's not always a light listen. And secondly, there's a rather unnecessary and slightly pointless introduction to each story by the ex-editor of a Holmes publication. Having listened to these once, it would have been nice to be able to edit those bits out!
"Excellent Full Cast Sherlock Production"
Another Excellent full cast production from a bygone era which I am thrilled to add to my Sherlock Holmes collection of audiobooks.
This is my first introduction to both actors Carleton Hobbs who plays the man himself to aplomb partnered with Nicholas Utechin.
The whole point of a good actor is to add their own style and wit to the characters they are bringing to life and these two make a good team who bounce off one another as they unravel the genius of the Sherlock Holmes thrillers. There are some real stinkers out there, but you will enjoy these two who are convincing as the detective duo.
No matter how many times I have listened to Conan Doyals master detective; (and I have just about every recorded Sherlock) as long as the characters are played well and the production team have done their job, then I enjoy sitting back and drift off into the Victorian world of horse drawn carriages, gas lights, urchins and good old Victorian thrillers.
This is a nice find and I am pleased to add yet another good selection of Sherlocks to my ever growing collection of full cast audiobooks and as long as the actors are good and the sound production convincing; I will keep on adding to my vast collection. So keep on adding as you find please Audible UK and I will keep purchasing. Worth every penny and Credit.
