Publisher's summary

Hap Collins, chicken plant guard, saves a young woman's life, and her father, owner of the chicken plant, rewards him with a large cash bonus. Hap and his best friend, Leonard Pine, head for a cruise to Mexico and the Caribbean. Not matching up to the exacting dress code of the on-board lobster restaurant, Leonard soon causes the pair to be abandoned in Mexico.

There they are saved from knife-wielding policemen by a geriatric fisherman and his daughter, Beatrice. But try as he might, Hap can't seem to stay out of other people's business. Beatrice's past returns to haunt her in the shape of a Mexican mobster and threatens to drag Hap, and all those closest to him, into further violence.

Take another thrill ride with Hap and Leonard.

Another Great Hap and Leonard

Not much to say other than it follows the quality of the others. It made me laugh and has some terrific twists I didn't see coming. A little more sexuality than the rest but what can you do, it's Lansdale. Highly recommend.

Love that Texas milieu kind of story

If you could sum up Captains Outrageous in three words, what would they be?

Goodhearted, funny and violent

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yeah, this one sped by. Course it was my shortest audio book. But it really was a good plot.

Which character – as performed by Phil Gigante – was your favorite?

All the voices seemed like Texas to me!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I remember there was a moving bit somewhere and I may have shed a tear but I can't remember what the hell it was. Someone dying or saying goodbye probably.

Any additional comments?

If you like Lansdale books you gotta love James Crumley and you Audible folks oughta sign him up pronto.

Hap and Leonard Take a Cruise? What?

The cruise is a vehicle for another great big batch of witty commentary, bloody action and fun. Enjoy against the backdrop of what can happen when you take a cruise on a bargain ocean line and fall in with at least one crime lord. And a devout nudist! Come on, what are you waiting for?

One of the best!

Took awhile to get started, but once it did, boy did the story barrel through to the satisfying end! Hap finally grows a pair of hairy ones in this installment. I highly recommend!!

Hap and Leonard Keep Me Company

and keep it real. The narrator is fexcellent. Each story is fun- I do very much enjoy the fight scenes as well as the banter between Hap and Leonard and the other characters like Jim and Brett. I appreciate the level of inclusion that 8s manifested in a believable way that also captures the tensions of the time with regard to sexism, racism, homophobia, and other social justice issues.

A beach book, cept with H & L mayhem

Compared to many of the books in this series that balance humor with violence, gore, and deep messages about hate, queerness or racism (books 2 and 3 in particular), this book is mostly just humor, violence and gore. It’s a combination that works for this author. The first half of the book, teeing up the vacation from hell, is a rollicking ride. The second half settles in with a bloody vengeance pact featuring rather clunky plots where allies just appear when convenient and “poof” part of Team Hap and Leonard. I very much enjoyed the reappearance of Jimbo, the wisecracking detective, even if Lansdale rushed things and used Jimbo to explain the whodunnit and chart out the vengeance pact in huge info dumps.
