Publisher's Summary

Joseph Finder introduced Nick Heller, a “private spy” who finds out things powerful people want to keep hidden, to widespread acclaim from the critics and wild enthusiasm from the readers, in the New York Times best-selling novel Vanished. Now, in Buried Secrets, Nick Heller returns, finding himself in the middle of a life-or-death situation that’s both high-profile and intensely personal.

Nick has returned to his old home town of Boston to set up his own shop. There, he’s urgently summoned by an old family friend. Hedge-fund titan Marshall Marcus desperately needs Nick’s help. His teenaged daughter, Alexa, has just been kidnapped. Her abduction was clearly a sophisticated professional job, done with extraordinary precision. Alexa, whom Nick has known since she was young, is now buried alive, held prisoner in an underground crypt, a camera trained on her, her suffering streaming live over the Internet. She’s been left with a limited supply of food and water and, if her father doesn’t meet the demands of her shadowy kidnappers, she’ll die.

As Nick begins to probe, he discovers that all is not quite right with Marshall Marcus’s business. He’s being investigated by the FBI, he has a lot of shady investors, his fund is in danger and now he has a lot of powerful enemies who may have the motivation to go after Marcus’s daughter. But to find out who’s holding Alexa Marcus hostage, Nick has to find out why. Once he does, he uncovers an astonishing conspiracy that reaches far beyond anything he could have imagined. And if he’s going to find Alexa in time, he will have to flush out and confront some of his deadliest opponents ever.

"Another good read from Joseph Finder"

This is the second book featuring Nick Heller (he was introduced in Vanished) and it doesn't disappoint. As with most of Finder's books, he is able to weave an interesting and captivating tale that holds your interest until the end. Nick Heller is tough ex Special Forces turned private investigator who is much more relatable and believable than Flynn's Mitch Rapp.

Holter Graham does a fine job narrating and disappears into the background just leaving the story for us to experience. With three minor exceptions. His voicing of Gabe, Taylor, and Alexa (in the early part of the book) was distracting and seemed unnatural. Gabe's whining or whatever it was supposed to be followed him from Vanished where I didn't enjoy it there as well. Unlike all the other characters in the book, whenever Gabe or Taylor spoke, I popped out of the story and was not thinking about what was being said, but how it was being said. However, these moments comprise a very small part of the book and Graham's other characters are superb, especially the protagonist Heller.

I have enjoyed each book from Joseph Finder and can't wait for the next Nick Heller adventure.

    Recommended.

    "Good Book While Traveling"

Buried Secrets, by Joseph Finder, is a fast-paced thriller that provides solid entertainment to a reader who wants a good, albeit somewhat far-fetched, plot populated by some interesting characters, from an author who knows his craft. It is mindless and forgettable, but it provided me with welcomed escape during a 30-hour trans-Pacific journey. I was glad to have it as a companion. The reader was acceptable.

    "Recent Finder Books"

Mr. Finder's recently written books, including Buried Secrets, have been outstanding and very exciting reads. His older books were so boring I found it hard to finish them. What miracle happened to make such a drastic change in his readability? Whatever it was, I like it very much.

    "Buried Secrets"

Bravo! I never listened to a book before, that actually had my heart racing in certain chapters, until now. First time reading a book by Joseph Finder...I am hooked!! Very smart. Clever plot lines. The narrator, Holter Graham, is gifted in his portrayal of a wide variety of dialects and gender voices. From Brazilian Portuguese and Russian male characters to a distressed, teenage prima dona, he captivated me to the point where I sometimes forgot how great the author's writing was, because I was so enthralled by the verbbage and intonation. I will seek out other books narrated by Holter Graham and read any book by Joseph Finder!

    "Awaiting the next one!!"

I have really enjoyed Joseph Finder's new character Nick Heller. I am hooked by the end of the first 10 minutes. Holter Graham does a fine narration, except for the nephew of the main character. He sounds like a whiney teenage boy and it's really bad. Thank goodness he's not in the book much.

    "Liked it"

If you liked Power Play, you will like this book. While I would not say this was his best - I think Paranoia was my favorite - the main character Nick Heller is fun to follow and this is fairly entertaining. There are a few twists, but they are telegraphed early and were easy to predict. Holter Grahm did his usual excellent job of reading which always adds to my enjoyment of the book. Overall, I was glad I spent the credit and would recommend it.

    "Joseph Finder at his best"

I am a huge Joseph Finder fan, and have read all of his books. This latest one, with my favorite character Nick Heller is as full of suspense and intrigue as any of his books. He keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The story is full of surprises and connections between people we grow to love and care about. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good suspenseful mystery.

    "Mostly not believable!"

Most of the story line is completely unbelievable. Yes, it's fiction but come on. Someone is going to bury someone 10 feet under ground and keep them alive??? Holter Graham is just about as hard to listen to as Scott Brick...that sarcasm in the voice thing that is hard to explain but completely annoying. I'm halfway through it now so I'll suffer through to the end.

    "Offensive story and descriptions"

I have always liked Joseph Finder before but in this book he included offensive and disturbing torture and killing methods that are nothing more than gratuitous violence. In addition, many of the story lines defy reality, and do not make sense in the real world. I had to stop mid book and will not go back to it. I hope he will return to his more realistic and less graphically violent story-telling. Otherwise, I will not read him again.

Do you remember how your grandfather reacted when he found out what the internet can do? This is what happens when he writes a book.
