Publisher's summary

Joseph Finder introduced Nick Heller, a “private spy” who finds out things powerful people want to keep hidden, to widespread acclaim from the critics and wild enthusiasm from the readers, in the New York Times best-selling novel Vanished. Now, in Buried Secrets, Nick Heller returns, finding himself in the middle of a life-or-death situation that’s both high-profile and intensely personal.

Nick has returned to his old home town of Boston to set up his own shop. There he’s urgently summoned by an old family friend. Hedge-fund titan Marshall Marcus desperately needs Nick’s help. His teenaged daughter, Alexa, has just been kidnapped. Her abduction was clearly a sophisticated professional job, done with extraordinary precision. Alexa, whom Nick has known since she was young, is now buried alive, held prisoner in an underground crypt, a camera trained on her, her suffering streaming live over the Internet. She’s been left with a limited supply of food and water and, if her father doesn’t meet the demands of her shadowy kidnappers, she’ll die.

And as Nick begins to probe, he discovers that all is not quite right with Marshall Marcus’s business. He’s being investigated by the FBI, he has a lot of shady investors, his fund is in danger and now he has a lot of powerful enemies who may have the motivation to go after Marcus’s daughter. But to find out who’s holding Alexa Marcus hostage, Nick has to find out why. Once he does, he uncovers an astonishing conspiracy that reaches far beyond anything he could have imagined. And if he’s going to find Alexa in time, he will have to flush out and confront some of his deadliest opponents ever.

One of the best, Finder keeps getting better

In the thriller genre, this book deserves 5 stars. The narration by Holter Graham is so good I had to check to make sure it wasn't Scott Brick! Yes, the various accents are over the top -- this is a fictional thriller, they should be! He does a great job voicing various characters, and since the book is told in the first person by likable tough guy Nick Heller, the voices should be regarded "as-heard by" his character anyway.

The story is quite good, not too gruesome or too sexual, but also gritty and exciting. I'm a dedicated fan of Mr Finder's and I hope he keeps up this terrific level of storytelling. This is exactly the kind of book I like to listen to.

voices, details

good story! clever plot line and good character developement. the upward rising tone of the young people is very aggravating. i did not know that the valley girls moved from cal to boston. and by the way, you don't "cock the trigger" on a revolver.

Great Listen

I was a little apprehensive because Audible had it on sale for under $10. Once I started listening, I was pleasantly surprised and couldn’t put it down. The narrator does a great job. You won’t be disappointed.

Another good read from Joseph Finder

This is the second book featuring Nick Heller (he was introduced in Vanished) and it doesn't disappoint. As with most of Finder's books, he is able to weave an interesting and captivating tale that holds your interest until the end. Nick Heller is tough ex Special Forces turned private investigator who is much more relatable and believable than Flynn's Mitch Rapp.

Holter Graham does a fine job narrating and disappears into the background just leaving the story for us to experience. With three minor exceptions. His voicing of Gabe, Taylor, and Alexa (in the early part of the book) was distracting and seemed unnatural. Gabe's whining or whatever it was supposed to be followed him from Vanished where I didn't enjoy it there as well. Unlike all the other characters in the book, whenever Gabe or Taylor spoke, I popped out of the story and was not thinking about what was being said, but how it was being said. However, these moments comprise a very small part of the book and Graham's other characters are superb, especially the protagonist Heller.

I have enjoyed each book from Joseph Finder and can't wait for the next Nick Heller adventure.

Recommended.

Awaiting the next one!!

I have really enjoyed Joseph Finder's new character Nick Heller. I am hooked by the end of the first 10 minutes. Holter Graham does a fine narration, except for the nephew of the main character. He sounds like a whiney teenage boy and it's really bad. Thank goodness he's not in the book much.

Fantastic

Where does Buried Secrets rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a classic "page turner" action book. Joseph Finder does an excellent job of the ebb and flow of the book with high points of tension and then relaxation. The plot is believable and the characters are spot on!!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nick Heller - of course!!!

Which character – as performed by Holter Graham – was your favorite?

He does a great job with all characters except the nephew of Nick. His breaking of the voice is over done. I know why he does it but - still too much

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Final few chapters - I could not stop listening until finished

Any additional comments?

Nick Heller is the next Jack Reacher

Great thriller overall

This was mostly a great thriller. Nick Heller is called on by an old family friend to find a daughter who has been kidnapped. Not everything is as it first appeared and so Heller needs to first learn some truth about what’s going on before he can track down the victim. Heller also reunites with an old flame who works at the FBI. Finder is a great storyteller and the plot never lags. There is the customary plot devices thrown in to plug story holes, such as the mysterious tech wizard friend who can do the impossible as needed but without any need for explanation. There was a part that I found unbelievable in which our very clever and resourceful Nick Heller penetrates into the bad guy’s lair and moves things around when the bad guy unexpectedly returns. Heller hides but it never occurs to him that it would be obvious to the bad guy that someone else had been there, in any case, Heller is a likable character, the story is interesting and keeps one’s attention. An excellent read.

A pleasant surprise!

First time Finder reader and bought "Buried Secrets" because of the price promotion. Really enjoyed the book and narrator. Will be going back to buy the first Nick Heller book, "Vanished".
