Publisher's summary

Joseph Finder introduced Nick Heller, a “private spy” who finds out things powerful people want to keep hidden, to widespread acclaim from the critics and wild enthusiasm from the readers, in the New York Times best-selling novel Vanished. Now, in Buried Secrets, Nick Heller returns, finding himself in the middle of a life-or-death situation that’s both high-profile and intensely personal.

Nick has returned to his old home town of Boston to set up his own shop. There he’s urgently summoned by an old family friend. Hedge-fund titan Marshall Marcus desperately needs Nick’s help. His teenaged daughter, Alexa, has just been kidnapped. Her abduction was clearly a sophisticated professional job, done with extraordinary precision. Alexa, whom Nick has known since she was young, is now buried alive, held prisoner in an underground crypt, a camera trained on her, her suffering streaming live over the Internet. She’s been left with a limited supply of food and water and, if her father doesn’t meet the demands of her shadowy kidnappers, she’ll die.

And as Nick begins to probe, he discovers that all is not quite right with Marshall Marcus’s business. He’s being investigated by the FBI, he has a lot of shady investors, his fund is in danger and now he has a lot of powerful enemies who may have the motivation to go after Marcus’s daughter. But to find out who’s holding Alexa Marcus hostage, Nick has to find out why. Once he does, he uncovers an astonishing conspiracy that reaches far beyond anything he could have imagined. And if he’s going to find Alexa in time, he will have to flush out and confront some of his deadliest opponents ever.

A pleasant surprise!

First time Finder reader and bought "Buried Secrets" because of the price promotion. Really enjoyed the book and narrator. Will be going back to buy the first Nick Heller book, "Vanished".

Interesting concept, lots of loose ends.

An interesting and nearly terrifying concept, but the book left me and my partner feeling curiously unfulfilled. I felt the book had great potential, but certain threads simply disappeared, and the main reason for the entire plot when completely explained at the end, made absolutely no sense.
The book is wonderfully read but overlong for the somewhat poorly developed plot. This is not the best thriller available,I'd rather suggest Lovely Bones or some such as a better alternative if you are looking for a thriller.

Not the best

Frustrating and unnecessarily complicated at times, however my main complaint is with the narrator. His interpretation of some of the characters was very annoying. Please future narrators, do not end a sentence with an inflection unless it is an actual question! The teenage boy's voice was especially bad; never have I heard any young boy sound like that in real life.
Overall the story kept me interested, but it's a 3-star at best.

Nice Thriller

Really enjoyed it. Good story, excellent narrator, expressive and clear. Story line a little predictable but still a good one. Kept my interest to the end, even prolog.

NO WAY TO HIDE

This is a hold on to the handlebars thriller. It’s filled with characters and most all participate in the many twists and turns. It must have taken considerable research to ferret out action details of wide scope and technology. You won’t put down this book till discover the truth.

My first book from this author. Very enjoyable.

The biggest problem was caused by listening to it on an Amazon Echo. With a character named Alexa, it kept stopping mid sentence. I had to change the echo’s wake word.

The plot and pacing were excellent. I liked learning about the protagonist’s back story.

Can't put this thriller down!

I have listened to a few other Joseph Finder including company man, killer instinct and vanished. I liked them all, and this one is by far the best. A like-able good guy yet not too good to be real, various interesting characters and plot twists. I also love this narrator, he keeps it interesting and is not distracting, its a voice I that matches what I think the main character, Nick, is like.

One of the best, Finder keeps getting better

In the thriller genre, this book deserves 5 stars. The narration by Holter Graham is so good I had to check to make sure it wasn't Scott Brick! Yes, the various accents are over the top -- this is a fictional thriller, they should be! He does a great job voicing various characters, and since the book is told in the first person by likable tough guy Nick Heller, the voices should be regarded "as-heard by" his character anyway.

The story is quite good, not too gruesome or too sexual, but also gritty and exciting. I'm a dedicated fan of Mr Finder's and I hope he keeps up this terrific level of storytelling. This is exactly the kind of book I like to listen to.

voices, details

good story! clever plot line and good character developement. the upward rising tone of the young people is very aggravating. i did not know that the valley girls moved from cal to boston. and by the way, you don't "cock the trigger" on a revolver.
